In Geneva, Dr. Nahum Gold- mann, president of the World Jew- ish Congress, Tuesday urged Jew- ish communities, organizations and individuals all over the world to "rally to help the international, ag- encies" providing relief to Biafra. In a statement issued here Tues- day, Dr. Goldmann deplored "the unspeakable horrors which- have disfigured the conflict over Biafra" and urged the protagonists "to transfer the conflict from the bat- tlefield to the conference table and seek a peaceful solution to their difficulties." The top leaders of 21 major U.S. Jewish religious, communal, relief and philanthropic bodies are co- operating with Catholic Relief Ser- vices, Church World Service, and the United States Committee for UNICEF, all of which have dis- tribution centers that get food and medicine through to the sick and starving. The announcement was made simultaneously with the appear- ance of a seven-column adver- tisement in the New York Times announcing the formation of the group and an appeal for funds. The signatories for the advertise- ment stressed the need for Am-' mericans of all faiths to aid the starving people in Biafra. "Air- lifts of food and medicine are possible but exeremely expen- sive," they added. "This is a race with death. Millions will die if food and medicine do not get through." Conservative and Reform Jews throughout the nation were urged by their leaders to contribute ma- terial and financial support to al- leviate the suffering of the people in the break-away eastern province of Nigeria. Henry N. Rapaport of Scarsdale, president of the United Synagogue of America, called on the members of its 825 affiliated Conservative congregations to join with others of all faiths to aid the Biafran vic- tims. "As a religious organization we are not concerned with any po- litical factors but entirely for hu- manitarian considerations. We can- not remain silent and neutral," he said. Rabbi Levi A. Olan of Dallas, president of the Central Confer- ence of American Rabbis, the Re- form rabbinical group, urged Re- form rabbis in the U.S. and Canada to Mobilize their congregations for immediate funds "to be used to buy relief for the stricken refu- gees" of Biafra. "We join all hu- manitarians whose conscience has been aroused by the desperate situ- ation in Biafra," he said. Leaders representing the three major religious bodies in the United States met with Secretary of State Dean Rusk for more than an hour and a half to ex- press their concern about provid- ing needed relief shipments to Biafra. After conferring with Rusk, members of the Ad Hoc Interfaith Committee for Biafran Relief pledged continuing and active liai- son with one another and appro- priate federal agencies. In their comments to Secretary Rusk, the delegation noted that "strong sup- port has developed among their respective memberships for quick and generous actions on behalf of Biafrans." The delegation urged that the United States use its "political and moral strength to achieve settlement between the Federal State of Nigeria and Biafra for the expeditious shipment of relief sup- plies to those in need."
