Synagogue to Be Depicted
on Stamp in Surinam

THE HAGUE (JTA) — The re-
storation of a 283-year-old syna-
gogue in Surinam, Dutch Guiana,
will be commemorated by a new
postage stamp to be issued by that
colony on the northeast coast of
South America, it was reported
here.
Surinam will issue two other
stamps related to its Jewish com-
munity, one of the oldest in the
Western Hemisphere. One of them
will depict the Jewish cemetery
and the other will reproduce a map
IA - the Jewish settlement. All three
stamps will bear Hebrew inscrip-
tions.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Prince Sou-
vanna Phouma, premier of Laos,
paid tribute to the technical as-
sistance rendered his country by
Israel and declared that relations
between the two nations have al-
ways been "excellent."
The East Asian statesman made
his remarks at Lydda Airport
where he stopped briefly en route
home from Europe. He was greet-
ed by high officials of the Israel
Foreign Ministry.
The prince referred specifically
to an experimental farm set up
by Israeli experts near the Laotian
capital of Vientiane. He said Is-

rael had helped his country's ag-
ricultural development in many
ways.

It was at the Mersky home in
August 1966 that the original con-
gregants met for worship under the
leadership of Rabbi Ernst J. Con-
rad. Subsequently, the Reform con-
gregation was invited to hold wor-
ship services at the Birmingham
Eagle School for its religious school
at 8:30. The congregation uses the

Title of Golden Talk at Cantor to_Co-Officiate
Bnai Moshe Town Hall at O-W on Holidays

Writer, editor and publisher
Harry Golden, who will appear
Sept. 10 at Cong. Bnai Moshe, will
discuss "So What Else Is New?"
for patrons and subscribers of the
1968 Town Hall series.
This also happens to be the title
of one of his most recent books, a
collection of his opinions on prac-
tically everything. The lecture will
be followed by a questioning panel
of press and radio personalities.
Golden is perhaps best known as
the former editor and publisher of
the Carolina Israelite. Compilation
of his reflections under the titles
"Only in America" and "For 2c
Plain" became best-selling books,
and both remained on the list at
the same time.
A limited number of tickets are
available at the congregation office,

Young Israel of Oak-Woods an-
nounces the appointment of Cantor
David Greenbaum for the High
Holy Day services. He will join
Rabbi I. Gordon in officating on
Rosh Hashana, Sept. 23 and 24, and
on Yom Kippur, Oct. 2.
