And why is that prestige fading? According to Donal Henahan'in a New York Times article on the new prominence of Asian violin- ists: "Jewish parents apparently are not insisting with the same vigor of a generation or two ago that their children take up the violin. "Much of the instrument's pres- tige among Jews in this century traces directly to the days in Im- perial Russia, when proficiency on the violin was one of the few escape routes from behind the Pale, the Jewish ghetto in southwestern Russia and southeastern Poland." Henahan points out that many virtuosos were taught by. Leo- pold Auer in St. Petersburg, and they left Russia in several stages, which kept Jewish violinists in the limelight until recent years. Among his students were Jascha Heifetz, Effrem Zimbalist, Na- than Milstein and Mischa Elman. The writer says that Israel is producing several outstanding vio- linists, carrying on the Central European tradition. They include Itzhak Perlman, Shmuel Ashkenasi and Pinchas Zuckerman.
