He said he went there as "second pilot" on one of the night airlift planes from Lis- bon. Nathan said he would soon re- turn to Biafra but said he would do so in a plane of his own which he intended to fly during daylight hours to the besieged region. He said the plane, which he declared he bought in Venice, had been painted white. He said he would go to Venice and fly from there to Biafra, accompanied by a number of Catholic priests. Meanwhile, Grand Rabbi Jacob Kaplan of France appealed to French Jewry Wednesday to aid the Biafrans because "We Jews have been the victims of genocide and understand human suffering." Prolonged Debate Over Abe Fortas Is Predicted in Senate in September A U.S. Senate rule which calls for return of Presidential nomina- tions to the President if the action on the nomination is interrupted by a recess was suspended in the Fortas-Thornberry instances by unanimous action last Friday. But Republican minority leaders took occasion to emphasize that this action did not indicate an ex- pression regarding confirmation. Action on the nomination of Abe Fortas as Chief Justice therefore will be resumed by the Senate after the national political conven- tions. Mr. Justice Fortas, in an ad- dress at a dinner of American College of Trial Lawyers, in Philadelphia, Saturday night, said that the democratic institu- tions of this country were being threatened by "some of the pro- fessed friends of law and order" as well as by the forces of law- lessness. His remarks, were be- lieved to be a response" to South- ern Senators who quizzed - him endlessly at Senate judiciary committee hearings recently. Fortas emphasized the need for an independent judiciary and said that the American law system's independence could not survive if Justices were "called to account in any other place !'or their vote or their opinions." Undoubtedly concerned about the charge that anti-Semitism play- ed a role in the onposition to the nomination of Fortas to the chief justiceship. U. S. Senator Robert Griffin of Michip-pn referred to the statement he made in response to a question after his address before the National Press Club in Washington. in which he reiter- ated that he would have supported the nomination of Arthur Goldberg r11 81"1"16.17 0 ACRES OF FUNI At Mid-America's fabulous resort ... a playtime paradise whereyou'H enjoy: • Terrific food • Beautiful heated and patio • All sports • Gala tloor shows pool • Planned Children's Activities New Low Rates! This argument was refut- ed earlier as being illogical be- cause in Fortas' instance it also would have meant retention in the highest court of a man already serving there who is merely being elevated to a higher post. Goldberg also rejected the idea UNLIMITED that Fortas should be blamed for his close friendship and contact with President Johnson. "Nothing that has been disclosed has indicated in any way that he lacks the qualification and tem- perament to be a great chief jus- tice, and as a citizen of the United States I would hope and trust that the appointment will be confirmed On Our Own Private by the Senate," Goldberg added. 18 Hole Championship A prolfmged debate over Fortas' FREE GOLF Course Australian Zionist's Memoirs But in the main there was a A noted Australian Zionist, Max Freilich, who was honored at the response, and the leadership of last World Zionist Congress on his men like Freilich helped overcome 75th birthday, h a s compiled obstacles. reminiscences in a volume, "Zion in Our Time," published by Bloch. .Because of his pioneering labors, While this is primarily a set of Freilich's memoirs, notably illu- memoirs about Zionist activities in strated, serve an important pur- Australia and New Zealand, this pose in Zionist historical litera- work has merit as an elaboration ture. on Zionist endeavors generally.
