Greenspun's opinions are usually
good ones.
He never did like Snarling Joe
McCarthy, whose shadow still hov-
ers over our nation, making even
so liberal a president as LBJ feel
that he must prove he is more
anti-Communist than any one of his
opponents. Throughout the Joe Mc-
Carthy era, Greenspun kept pound-
ing on him and once even person-
ally excoriated him to his face.
He was one of a very few who
stood up to the Wisconsinner.
In Nevada, the late Senator Pat
McCarran was once sup r en e.
Greenspun stood up to him, too,
and McCarran moved Washington
and earth to discomfit Greenspun.
But the latter stood his ground.
Jewishly, Greenspun is a stal-
wart champion of his faith.
What Hank did during the Israel
War for Independence back in 1948
is incredible. He underwent hair-
breadth adventures to get arms for
the Haganah. He risked his marri-
age and his life in as exciting a
series of exploits as was ever fan-
tasized by any novelist.
The story of Greenspun's life has
been told by Alex Pelle and him-
self in a breath-taking book called
"Where I Stand" (published by
McKay).
That book would make a movie
surpassing in excitement anything
that Hollywood has produced. I
wondered why it his not yet been
made.
I discovered the book recently.
I gulped it down in one swallow.
And I am happy to join David Ben
