WASHINGTON — The Washing-
ton Post reported Wednesday that
United States officials believe a
serious illness has forced Egypt's
President Nasser to seek treatment
in the Soviet Union.
The Post said officials here be-
lieve only • an emergency could
force Nasser to leave Egypt at
a time of- increasing unrest to go
to the Soviet Union.
"The dominant theory here is
that Nasser's long-troublesome dia-

betes has now taken a serious turn,
accentuated by the nervous strain
of his political problems at home,"
the Post said.
The Post said that Nasser re-
portedly is having difficulty us-
ing his legs and that this could
indiCate hardening of the arter-
ies, .a condition often associated
with advanced diabetes.
Another explanation, the papers
said. is that he is suffering from.
an acute inflamation of the sdi-.
atic nerve in his leg. Sciatica, it
pointed out, is the result of some
other malady, rather than being
an illness in itself.
Since July 26, Nasser and his
family have been staying at the
Tskhaltubo Baths near Kutaisy in
the Georgian Republic, a ' hot
springs, whose three-week treat-
ment is supposed to help relieve I
both sciatica and rheumatism, the

Nahal Posts Needed
to Counter Attacks,
Envoy Tells U Thant

UNITED NATIONS (JTA) — A
sharp recent increase. of "armed
attacks and, incursions from Jor-
danian territory" as well as the
mining of roads and "other acts Of
sabotage by raiders operating from
the east bank of the Jordan" un-
derscore the importance of out-
posts established by the Nahal
Corps of the Israel Defense Forces,
Israel's UN envoy Joseph Tekoah
said in a letter Monday to Secre-
tary-General IJ Thant.
The letter was in reply to one
addressed to . Thant by Jordan's
charge d'affaires, Anton A. Naber,
on July 18 to which he attached .a
map allegedly depicting the loca-
tions of "some 35 new • Jewish
settlements, the majority" (of
which) are "paramilitary fortified
settlements . . to be established"
in occupied territories-
Naber alleged that they "consti-
tute the groundwork for a world
wide campaign to recruit more
settlers to the occupied territories
`to help populate- enlarged Israel'
and provided it with a 'security
belt'."_
He assert.c1 that "In order to
achieve these aims ,and in order
to solve the demographic prob-
lem of disnarity between the
Arab and Jewish populations,
the Israeli authorities are sub-
jecting the Arabs on the West
Bank of the Jordan and the other
occupied territories to -continu-
ous harrassment, economic
strangulation and semi-starvation
to compel them to leave their
honies and lands."
Tekoah denied these charges and
said that only 14 of the settlements
cited in Naber's letter are in for-
mer Jordanian areas now occupied
by 'Israel and some have been in
existence for "some time." He
noted that the Nahal paramilitary
seftlments Carty on activities "de-
sicicned to assist in ensuring the
security of the area and in main-
taining the- cease fire."
