For the Record: No Jewish Judge on Canada High Court Editor, The Jewish News: I enjoy reading your column Purely Commentary, because it re- veals such a thorough knowledge of what is happening in the Jewish world today. In your issue of July 26 you wrote a very interesting piece about "Jewish Chief Justices in Many Lands," in which you include the name of Mr. Justice "Nathan Nemetz, Judge of Supreme Court of British Columbia." Mr. Justice Nemetz, to the best of my knowl- edge, is ,not the chief justice of the Supreme (or Superior) Court of the province of British Columbia. He is one of the associate justices of that province's highest court. There is no Jewish judge on the Supreme Court of Canada nor was there ever such a judge in that country. In addition to Mr. Justice Ne- metz, there are other (and senior from the time of appointment) judges on the highest courts in different provinces in Canada: Mr. Justice Harry Batshaw, a very active and veteran Zionist leader, was the first Jew to be ap- pointed to this high office any- where in Canada (in the province of Quebec); Mr. Justice Abraham H. Lieff, another distinguished Zionist, a former president of a synagogue in Ottawa, a Talmudic scholar, be- came the first Jew to reach the Supreme Court of Ontario; Mr. Justice Benjamin Robinson was the second Jew appointed to the highest bench in Quebec prov- ince; Mr. Justice Samuel Freedman, an outstanding spokesman for the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University, was the first Jew to be so highly honored by the prov- ince of Manitoba; Mr. Justice Nemetz of British Columbia. I think, was the most recent of these appointments. But none of these men, as dis- tinguished and as able as they are, have ever served as a "chief jus- tice. HARRY J. When the smoke cleared away, the targets didn't have one mark on them, The sergeant now tried his men at a fifty- yard • distance. Results: nil again. Even at twen- ty-five yards the embryo Dead-Eye Dicks regis- tered complete misses. USSR Sidur Draws Reader's Comments Editor, The Jewish News: Some relevant observations with reference to the new Jewish USSR Sidur (The Jewish News, 7-26-68): "Sidur Ha-Shalom." Its title al- ludes to the concept of "Prayer- book Peace," as it is indeed called in Russian "Molit Verruik Mir." However "the word shalom also spells the Hebrew for complete," i.e., when the Vav (the second last letter) is missing, and when the word is not punctuated by vowels for the vowel t seire (two dots side by side) under the letter lamed is distinctive for "complete." while the vowel holam (a dot) above the `lamed' signifies peace. The Sidur is complete inasmuch as it contains 479 pages. But is it to be regarded as salutary? No and yes! No, if by its only publica- tion, the USSR will not erase its policy of repression toward Russian Jewry; if it is devised by the USSR as a swan song — God forbid! Yes, if this new Sidur denotes a trend to make an end of the Soviet gov- ernment's persecution of its Jew- ish population, pertaining to Jew- ish education. in particular. The inclusion in the Sidur of a prayer for the government of the USSR is not unique. JOSHUA JOYRICH 20455 Cheyenne • Solving Refugee Issue in "Reclaimed" Israel Editor, The Jewish News: The refugee issue will finally be resolved, provided Israel does not succumb to the blandishments of the United States, the threats of the Soviet Union, and the illusion of a signed "peace" with the Arabs. What Israel needs is not peace now but entrenchment in the re- claiming (not conquered) terri- tories, which can be best achieved in the present twilight between peace and war and with a mur- derous enemy at all the gates. Thus petty quarrels will be sub- dued and a generation of Sabras, that never knew the ghettos, will grow up and assume leadership. The new main effort of the American Jews at present is to force the State Department to allow planes to be sent to Israel, ridiculing the notion that there has 'ever been an arms race. Al- ways there was only one single horse running on the turf winning all the purses, and the jockey a frothing "Camel." PAUL ELDRIDGE 227 Riverside Dr. New York, N.Y. Poland Reportedly Shut Only Jewish Camps WARSAW (JTA)—New evidence was reported here Monday that the decision of Polish authorities to cancel government-aided Jewish summer schools this year was part of the official anti-Jewish cam- paign of the Gomulka regime. When officials anounced termina- tion of the program last spring, they gave budgetary problems as the reason. It has been learned, however, that not only were sum- mer camps for children studying foreign languages not curtailed or eliminated but in fact have been expanded. The Jewish summer schools had provided instruction in Jewish subjects, in addition to the usual summer camp programs 15 Argentine Writers Contribute to 'Israel Book' Courses Started in Child Raising BUENOS AIRES (JTA) — Publi- cation of a book, " Israel Seen NEW YORK — (JTA) — A New Through Argentine Eyes," by 15 York Jewish child welfare agency prominent Argentine writers, was has started a pilot program to announced here at a reception at teach better child-rearing methods the Presidente Hotel.
