Mark Spitz was the big winner
at the Santa Clara International
swimming meet in California. Re-
cently graduated from high school,
the 18-year-old Spitz scored vic-
tories in the 100 and 200-meter
butterfly, the 400-meter freestyle
and was a member of three win-
ning relay teams. His 400-meter
freestyle clocking of 4:08.1 bet-
tered the listed world record, but
missed the 4:07.7 mark he had set
two weeks before. Both butterfly
times (56.5 and 2:06.0) were close
to his own world marks.
Earlier, Spitz ended his career
as the greatest high school swim-
mer of all-time. A three-time All-
American, he established five na-
tional interscholastic (short-course)
records in the 100-yard butterfly
(49.1, 1967); 200-yard individual
medley (1.54.4, 1967); 100-yard
freestyle (46.0, 1968); 200-yard
freestyle (1.40.5, 1968) and 400-
yard freestyle (3.38.0, 1968). The
200-yard freestyle mark bettered
Don Schollander's American rec-
ord.

Former Ohio State swimmer Leon-
ard Adell of Valley Stream, N.Y.,
has been named chairman of the
United States Maccabia Games
men's swimming team.
The 1969 World Maccabia
Games will start a week later
than originally scheduled. The
dates have been changed from
July 21 through 30 to July 28
to Aug. 6.
A bronze statue dedicated to
Jewish athletes who perished at
the hands of the Nazis was un-
veiled recently at the Maccabia
Sports Village near Tel Aviv. A
memorial book containing the
names of the deceased will be
kept permanently at the same
location. Jewish sports organiza-
tions from all over the world at-
tended the reunion in Israel. The
statue is the work of Karl Duldig
of Australia, a former member of
the Hakoah-Vienna club of Aus-
