Strict Gun Control
Urged by Eisendrath

Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath,
president of the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, urged Con-
gress to take prompt and strong
action on guii control legislation
which will _require registration of
guns, licensing of owners, and
banning of inter-state purchase of
arms. "Rarely has the will of the
people for sanity been more mani-
fest," he said, "and rarely has that
will been so cravenly and obtusely
ignored." Rabbi Eisendrath is a
member of the Emergency Corn-
mittee for Gun Control headed by
Col. John Glenn.
In a message to congregations
which comprise the UAHC, the
Reform Jewish official urged edu-
cation and action programs which
would continue if necessary even
beyond this Congressional session,
and beyond this year, until "truly
effective and rational measures
are taken to put a brake on our
mad traffic in firearms."

GENEVA (JTA)—Israel has re-
buked Libya for introducing the
Middle East conflict into delibera-
tions of the United Nations Eco-
nomic and Social Council (ECO-
SOC) on international economic
and social policies.
Wahbi L-Bouri, the Libyan rep-
rese-ntative, contended that+ eco-
nomic progress had been jeopard-
ized in several Arab countries by
"Israel aggression" which he •said,
not only caused material damage
and created a refugee problem
but forced the diversion of much
needed funds into armaments.
Miss H. Hareli, of Israel, speak-
ing as an observer and exercising
the right of reply said that the
proper forums for discussing the
Middle East problem were the
General Assembly and the Secur-
ity Council, not UNESCO. War al-
ways is bound to bring distress,
she said, adding that it was not
Israel but the Arab countries that
were the aggressors in the Middle
East.
