Purely Commentary Insanity of Terrorist-Haters: Hijackers Who Glory in the Taste of Blood of Israelis "Israeli blood tastes good" said one of the terrorists who hi- jacked the El Al plane and forced it to divert from Tel Aviv to Algiers. That's the mentality of haters who pose as political agents but who, in reality, need to be examined psychiatrically. A Catholic priest reported that incident and there is no reason to doubt it. even though it is such a tragic revelation of the insanity of the hijackers. — That's Israel's and Jewry's difficulty: that the people to be dealt with are so imbued with bloodthirstiness! Perhaps a hitherto indifferent world will realize what is at stake, the type of lunacy and derangement of mind that seeks to harm Israel ,and Israelis. The hijacking of planes has become an international danger. Out of the Arab terrorists' act must emerge such firmness in interna- tional action to protect aviation's security that there will never again emerge the act of horror that was enacted as the Israeli plane left Rome on a peaceful mission. An Unjust Treatment of Arab-Jewish-Israel Issue by Noted Writer in a Great Newspaper Drew Middleton is a respected name in journalism. That is why his unjust treatment of the Arab-Israel-Jewish relations and the status of the American friendship for Israel is so deplorable and can not be condoned. In the final of his New York Times series of articles, which really do not add anything new to a knowledge of transpiring. events, he claims to be dealing with the attitude of "the Arab world" but actually introduces- the rehashed Arab venomous attacks not only upon Israel but also upon American Jewry, as well as upon the entire U.S. There is a lame attempt at being cautious when Middleton writes, in commencing his concluding articles, that "Arab hostility, due largely but not entirely to American support for Israel, has brought about a sharp decline in the prestige and influence of the United States in the Middle East." The insertion of the gratuitous words "not entirely" does not rescue Middleton from the charge that his entire article is based only on a repetition of Arab venom—that which has been uttered in appeals to hatred over Cairo Radio, in the Russians' speeches at the UN, in all forms of hate-maneuvering that continue to be based on the lie. What happens as a result of such distressing analyses of events in a troubled area is that it undermines the friendship between two peoples—the American and the Israeli—and gives credence to the worst type of news-angling. Surely, the New York Times writer should not be permitted to lean upon a mythical "Western diplomat" who had the audacity to say: "Sometime, some President of the United States will have to review the entire American policy for the area, specifically considering whether ' the cost to the United States of support for Israel is worth the economic and political losses in the Arab world." This is the most shocking statement ever resorted to by a responsible news analyst, since it resorts to the pressures of an unknown (Who is he, Mr. Middleton?) "diplomat" who injects himself into American internal affairs. It is based on a lie! How much aid has the U.S. given Israel in comparison with assistance received from this country by the Arab states? Israel DOES and MUST CONTINUE to receive the best in American aid: the friendship of the American people ! This is being undermined by the type of clap-trap borrowed from the Arab lie! And if further proof is needed that Mr. Middleton has rendered an injustice, let us refer to the portion of his article wherein h_e talks about politicians fearing the loss of "the Jewish vote." This is the type of nonsense that is worthy of accused assasin Sir- han, whose supporters have begun to justify the murder of Senator Robert Kennedy out of hatred for Israel. Since there is not a single Presidential candidate who is not defending the American-Israel friendship, which politician, Mr. Middleton, is afraid of the loss of the "Jewish vote"? You owe us an answer to that—and we regret that the great New York Times should have fallen prey to a scheme of dignifying the Arab lie to the detriment of a valuable international friendship. R is the type of journalistic blunder that destroys the hopes for peace in an embattled area. Jewish Chief Justices in Many Lands President Johnson's nomination of Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas for the chief justiceship of the United States adds an important name to the list of Jews who have served in similar high positions in many lands. Sir Isaac Isaacs was Chief Justice of Australia from 1930 to 1931. Sir Isaac earlier served as governor general of Australia. Sir Michael Myers of Wellington, New Zealand, was Chief Justice of New Zealand from 1929 to 1943. The Marquess of Reading—Rufus Daniel Isaacs (1860-1935)—was Chief Justice of Great Britain and had held many other major positions in his government. Julius Other, who died in 1924, was Rapporteur of the Bundes- Verfassungsgerichtshof (Federal Constitutional Court) of Vienna. Heinrich Klang (1875-1954) was chairman of the Senate of the Supreme Court of Vienna. Sir Hersch Lauterpacht (born in 1897 in Galicia. died in 1960) was Judge of the International Court of Justice at The Hague. Lord Cohen of Walmer (Lionel Leonard Cohen), Life Peer Lord Justice of Appeal of Great Britain. Sir Cyril Barnett, Lord Justice of Appeal and Privy Councillor in London. Rene Cassin of France was Vice President of European Court of Human Rights National Commissioner for Justice. Dr. Manfred Lachs, a native of Galicia, was Judge of the Inter- national Court of Justice at The Hague. ("Manfred Lachs was a g reat friends of mine before he left Poland some years ago. He is very lucky to be at The Hague, and not in Poland. In any case, I don't think that Poland could dismiss him from his post," our London corres- pondent, Josef Fraenkel, writes to us). Nemetz Nathan, Judge of Supreme Court of British Columbia. Mr. Fraenkel provides us with these names of Austrian Jewish jurists: Joseph Unger (b. 1828-1913) President of Reichsgericht. Julius Glaser (b. 1831) "Father" of Austrian criminal procedure—Minister of Justice (only Jew to hold this office in an Austrian Cabinet). Attorney General at the Supreme Criminal Court. JuFsatmicoeuss By Philip Slomovitz In the instance of Mr. Justice Fortas, the confirmation of his ap- pointment by the Senate would elevate him to the third highest position in the United States—and Mr. Fortas would become the first Jew in our land to hold such a high position. He is being called a lawyer's-lawyer's- lawyer and there is overwhelming concession that he has earned the appointment and that the High Court of the U.S. would be enriched by his presiding over it. * * The New Trends Among Inheritors of Prophecy Time Magazine (July 19) carried this item in its People depart- ment: "Portnoy's Complaints', newest novel by Philip Roth, 35, won't hit the stalls for another seven months, yet about half of its 80,000 words have already been quoted by four national publications. And pretty lively they are too: explicitly detailing Portnoy's super sex life from toilet training through masturbation and on to intercourse, intercourse, intercourse, all told in the form of monologues delivered by a Jewish boy to his psychoanalyst. With that kind of copy and more to come, no wonder Random House has given Roth a $250,000 advance for the book and Bantam $350,000 for paperback rights. With movies, foreign translation and the rest, poor Portnoy ought to come off the couch with something like $1,000,000—which should just about pay the psychiatrist." At the risk of free advertising to Random, Bantam, Roth and their glorious subject, we offer this as an inspiration to those who are asking many questions—about our authors, publishers, their sex complexes, the public and its encouragement to the trends that give priority to the psychiatrically-infected. And a major .question is why the Jewish lad who needs the $1,000,000 psychiatrist must be Jewish, as he usually emerges as the brainchild of Jewish authors who thereby create new fashions out of a heritage that once took pride in Prophecy. Hope for Peace on a Tragic Anniversary There is a peace in our community on the anniversary of the great tragedy that commenced on July 23 a year ago. People who have faith had prayed for this peace. There were, in the interim, prophets of doom. We have had tensions: they continue to plague us. Now we hope that peace is not temporary, that it will be lasting, that all who have good will in their hearts will strive not for power but for amity. May the fires of July 1967 remain extinguished in this as well as in all American communities! * 'Dangerous Drift in Middle East' Under this heading, the Philadelphia Inquirer published the follow- ing: We, the undersigned, Roman Catholic priests, sisters and lay teachers, have just participated in a two-week Institute of Jewish Studies at Marymount College, Tarrytown, New York. Considering the present dangerous drift of events in the Near East, it seems fitting to us to call the attention of Christians to the threat of genocide that now exists in that area. Two and one-half million Israelis did win an almost miraculous victory over their eighty million enemies in the "Six Day War" of 1967. That miracle may not repeat itself. The Arab armies can afford to lose many wars to Israel; they need only win one of them. It is obvious from the speeches of their leaders that their motiva- tion is not mere modification of borderlines, but the utter destruc- tion of Israel. This land, brought into being by the United Nations declaration in 1947, has, as Senator Kennedy reminded us, the right to exist. May it never again be said of Catholics and Protestants that, faced with the potential destruction of the Jewish people, they an- swered with silence. Mark 50 Years of Hebrew U. on Mt. Scopus (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) JERUSALEM — President Johnson declared Wednesday, in a message of congratula- tions to the Hebrew University on its 50th anniversary, that "The people of Israel have every reason to take pride in this magnificent institution of higher learning and research and in its contribution to im- proving the conditions of life for all men." (- The President also cited "the strong links which have existed between my country and the Hebrew University since the day of its founding by Dr. Chaim Weizmann," ad- ding that "Over the years there has been a steady flow of cultural interchange tween the Hebrew Univers and the American academh; community." He concluded with the hope that "this relationship may be magnified and deepened in the years to come." The cable was addressed to Avraham Har- man, university president, and Samuel Rothberg, president of the American Friends of the Hebrew University. The Hebrew University observed the 50th anniversary of its founda- tion stonelaying on Mount Scopus Wednesday. The occasion acquired special significance because of the res- toration to the university last year of its original home after 19 years of seperation from it, and the fact that the ceremonies took place at the very site where the university began its existence. Foundation stones were laid for a number of student dormitories. The central ceremony in late afternoon took place in the amphi- theater in the presence of Presi- dent Zalmen Shazar and with the participation of Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, who was present at the laying of the foundation stones in 1918. The ceremony included a musi- cal program in which Richard Tucker.. Metropolitan tenor took part. A highlight of the afternoon was the conferring of an honorary doctorate on Arthur J. Goldberg, former U. S. permanent repre- sentative at the UN. (Editor's Note: We publish below the first five names as representative of the group of 36 persons who signed this letter.) But the foundation stones for the great university were laid on July 24, 1918. We are now, therefore, marking the 50th anniversary of the great institution of learning which continues to serve as one of the symbols of Jewish national rebirth. Dr. Chaim Weizmann was the inspired leader who labored for the fulfillment of what began as a dream for a Hebrew University to serve the Jewish people. He was privileged to see it become a reality. .In- his autobiography, "Trial and Error," Dr. Weizmann, who later became the first president of Israel, incorporated this historic note about the laying of the foundation stones for the university: ". . . Before leaving London I had secured from Mr. Balfour his consent in principle to our trying to lay the foundation stones of the Hebrew University on the plot of land acquired for that purpose on Mount Scopus—subject, of course, to the consent of the military authority on the spot. In May 1918 we approach ed General Allenby on the subject and found him at first—not surprisingly, perhaps—very aback, He exclaimed: 'But we may be rolled back any minute! What is the good of beginning something you may never be able to finish?' My reply was: 'This will be a great act of faith—faith in the • fairy which is bound to come, and faith in the future of Palestine. I can think of no better symbol of faith then the founding of the Hebrew University, under your auspices, and in this hour.' He was not unim- pressed but he replied: 'You have chosen almost the worst possible time. The war in the West is passing a most critical phase; the Germans are almost at the gates of Paris'. I said: 'We shall• win this war. The present crisis is only one episode'. In the end Allenby agreed to send a, telegram to the Foreign Office asking for advice, and after a short interval received an affirmative reply . . ." In this definition of the symbol of faith, Dr. Weizmann revealed the difficulties that accompanied the task of university-building—difficulties as serious as those in state-making. All of the obstacles were overcome. The university was in exile from Mount Scopus for 20 years and even that dispersion has ended. Now the university is back on Mount Scopus, functioning there in addition to the vast campus in the New City of Jerusalem. The 50th anniversary of foundation stone laying becomes an event of immense significance and world Jewry's blessings to the Hebrew University are accompanied by hopes and prayers that there will be an end to conflicts and the assurance of a long era of benefit to all the THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS peoples the great school is serving so diligently. ,-
