Sale of Jets to Israel Urged by Congressmen

(Continued from Page 1)
United States allows the Arab
countries to become strong with
Soviet military aid, while not
maintaining appropriate assistance
to Israel. This resolution would,
therefore, insure an adequate
balance of power in the Middle
East, one that preserve the integ-
rity of each of the nations there."
Congressman Bertram Podell
(D., N.Y.), a freshman Congress-
man and author of the resolution,
has sought support from all mem-
bers of Congress. As of now, 23
states are represented. The only
other Congressman in the group
from the entire state of Michigan
besides Rep. Conyers was Repub-
lican William S. Broomfield of
Oakland County. Other leading
Congressmen to endorse the reso-
lution were: Thomas E. Morgan,
chairman of the House Foreign
Affairs Committee, a n d Mrs.
Frances P. Bolton, the ranking
minority member of the Foreign
Affairs Committee.
In June of 1967 Congressman
Conyers, a constant supporter of
l'srael's position, made a strong
—statement against the United
States' non-involvement in the
Arab blockade of the Gulf of
Aqaba. Since the war of a year
ago in the Middle East, the Soviet
Union has increased its aid to the
Arab nations to such a level that
they are now better equipped than
ever before, thus making the situ-
ation there quite tense, he has
indicated.

ment issued here that the admin-

Israel with the jets it needs.
He said, "the surest way to
bring about another disruption of
the all-too-slender truce which
presently exists in that area is to
permit an imbalance of power to

develop," adding "we should not
only give assurance to Israel on
this matter but proceed to de-
liver the weaponry which she
requires."
Dirksen said that a joint state-
ment issued by Prime Minister
Levi Eshkol and President John-
son last January at the LBJ Ranch
about "sympathetic" U.S. examin-
ation of Israel's military needs
was inadequate.
Sen. Dirksen said an "explosive
situation" was developing in the
Middle East following the Soviet
military build-up of the radical
Arab states, the French jet sale
to Iraq and the U.S. supply of
jets to Jordan. He also noted the
massive Russian naval power de-
veloping in the Mediterranean.
The Dirksen statement now puts
the Republican leadership of both
Senate and House clearly on record
favoring immediate sale of Phan-
toms to Israel.
Sen. Hugh Scott, Pennsylvania
Republican, also urged President

Johnson to authorize the sale 0

bombers to Is-

rent to aggres-
sion. "Israel

Nasser's arsen-
al. Otherwise the precarious bal-
ance of strength which is the only
restraint upon Nasser, will be up-
set," he said in a telegram.
Sen. Scott said while the recent
signing of the nuclear non-prolif-
eration treaty with the Soviet
Union "raises hopes" that an
arms control agreement can be
reached for the Middle East, such
efforts require time and "in the
meantime, the Soviets continue to
arm the Arabs. As long as they
do so, the U.S. must help to keep
Israel strong."

At the time of Dr Goldstuecker's

pointed out in some circles that the
liberalization movement in Czecho-
slovakia had so far benefited the
intellectual and educated classes
more than the mass of Czechs.

WASHINGTON — A report re-

Wednesday confirmed the election
of Prof. Eduard Goldstuecker,
chairman of the Czech Writers
