In an action sponsored by Clergy and Laymen Concerned About Vietnam, the group attempted to gain admission to the center, after which each chained person would have joined Johnson in refusing to step forward for induction. Representing the Jewish faith was Rabbi Balfour Brickner, di- rector of interfaith activities for the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and a member of the steering committee of CALCAV. The three other clergymen chained to the young protestor were the Rev. Richard R. Fernandez, na- tional director of CALCAV; the Rev. Richard John Neuhaus, edi- tor of Una Sancta' and the Rev. Dr. George W. Webber, on the staff of the Metropolitan Urban Service Training Facility and on the faculty of Union Theological Seminary. Also chained to him were Johnson's wife, Carol, carry- ing their infant son Luke; Mrs. Irma Zigas of Women's Strike for Peace; Mark Lundeen, a draft resister and fellow student; and Mrs. Robert C. Ransom, a mother from Bronxville, N.Y. whose old- est son was killed recently in. Vietnam. The four religious leaders stated that they had chained themselves to Johnson in order to drama- tize their support for him to sym- bolically impede the process which would likely terminate with Johnson's imprisonment. After twice refusing admission. to the chained group, officials warned Johnson that if he did not enter by 9 a.m. he would be con- sidered non-cooperative. Johnson then declared his decision to re- fuse induction, the chains were removed, and he, his wife, and child returned home. SUN., MON., TUES.
