THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, July 19, 1968 3 - U.S. Med Students to Take Training hi Israel Under Govt. Pilot Program (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) . WASHINGTON — United States medical students now have the op- portunity to take three months of their advanced training in Israel. The Tel Aviv medical school, in Conjunction with the Tel Hashomer hospital, has been chosen as the center of a pilot program spon- sored by the U. S. Public Health Service and administered by the American Association of Medical Colleges. Designed to acquaint American students with foreign medical fa- Cilities the problems they en- counter, the program, according to association co-ordinator, Francis Cholko, has already awarded fel- lowships to 20 students represent- ing medical schools from all sec- tions of the country. Ten are now in Israel. The American agencies in- volved also hope to initiate the same kind of "Israel" program in several more countries. Al- ,' though students have yet to be scheduled for India and Pakis- tan, the groundwork has already been laid for programs in those countries. The possibilities of such programs in Yugoslavia, Northland Poland, Tunisia and the United Arab Republic have also been under consideration. According to Cholko, the avail- ability of counterpart funds—local currency used in payment to the United States government — gov- erned the selection of possible countries where the program could be instituted. Israel was chosen from them to head the pilot pro- gram because the similarity of its medical problems and facilities to the U.S. "insured that the program would begin with ease." "For the United States, the ben- efits are plain." Cholko added. "Top-ranking medical students are not only able to contribute and put to use some of their knowledge but are able to take something away and, in many cases, are pro- vided with an opportunity to ob- serve diseases that they otherwise could not." In the Middle Ages In the Middle Ages the Jews were commissioned to buy gold and silver for the mints of various sovereigns, and occasionally the mints were leased to them. Israel to Build Area in Hebron for Orthodox (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) JERUSALEM — The minister of religious affairs announced Wed- nesday that a special quarter will be built in Hebron for a group of Orthodox Jews who went there last Passover and announced their in- tention of remaining. Dr. Zerah Warhaftig said the plans included family housing, dormitories for yeshiva students, a dining hall, cli- nics and a children's house. The settlers said they were de- termined to revive the Jewish corn- munity in Hebron, which is the site of the Patriarchs' tombs and is considered holy by Orthodox Jews. But no Jews have lived there since the Arab riots of 1936, and foreign Arabs entering the West Bank to visit relatives because the Israeli stamp might create diffi- culties when they returned home. Warhaftig replied," That's the way it's done everywhere. People don't come and go like thieves in the night." God guards the fool.—Psalms 16.
