Judith Joan Sperling
New Mrs. John Kam ins

MRS. JOHN KAMINS

Judith Joan Sperling, daughter
of Dr. and Mrs. Herman M. Sper-
ling of Wareham Dr., Huntington
Woods, and John Mark Kamins,
son of Mr. and Mrs. David Ka-
mins of Chicago, were united in
marriage recently at Kingsley Inn,
where Dr. Richard C. Hertz offi-
ciated.
The bride wore a floor-length
A-line gown of peau de soie over-
laid with English net and re-em-
broidered Alencon lace appliques.
The Empire bodice was fashioned
with a wedding band collar and
long lace sleeves pointed over the
wrist. A full, chapel-length train
was topped by a peau de soie Dior
bow, and the headpiece, a match-
ing lace and pearl Camelot crown,
held a three-tier bouffant veil of
silk illusion. The bride carried
Stephanotis, Phalaenopsis .and or-
chids on her confirmation Bible.
Linda Sperling, the bride's sis-
ter, was maid of honor. Brides-
maids were Lois Welber, Ilene
Harris and Mrs. George Fried-
man of San Diego, sister of the
bridegroom.
George Friedman was best man,
and ushers were Jay Levine and
Chicagoans Mark Brendzel and
Cary Weiner.
Following a Miami Beach hon-
eymoon, the couple is living in
Ann Arbor, where they attend
school.

LETTER BOX

Demonstration Explained
as 'An Evening of Crisis'

Editor, The Jewish News:
I am writing to correct an error
in your report of the demonstra-
tion staged some weeks ago against
Menahem Begin's Detroit visit, and
incidentally to share with your
readers some impressions of that
event.
The demonstration was against
Israeli "expansionism" but became
more a demonstration against the
State of Israel itself, although the
statement handed out was careful
not to condemn Israel's existence
and even threw in a condemnation
of Polish anti-Semitism for good
measure. A number of small Left-
ist groups joined the main spon-
sors, the Arab and African student
organization; but it ,should be em-
phasized that the /two most im-
portant organizations of the student
left (Students for a Democratic So-
ciety and the Association of Black
Students) decided not to join. The
student Zionists of the left were in
a quandary, wanting to protest Be-
gin's appearance without involving
the organization to which most of
them belong (Hashomer Hatzair)
or hurting the State of Israel. They
therefore paraded with Hebrew
signs under the name of the now
defunct Jewish campus club "New
Haskala."
While some of us had asked
them to at least picket separately,
they lacked a permit for this and
joined the main _line of marchers
until constant protests by arriving
guests and their own queasiness
at marching in an anti-Israel
demonstration forced them to give
this up.
It was an evening of crisis for
their Zionism and even their Jew-
ishness, since one of the signs car-
ried in the march (later removed)
was anti-Semitic. No doubt they
made a political mistake; but these
boys and girls who see their fu-
ture in the kibutz did not deserve
the abuse hurled at them, some of
which came from middle-aged emi
grants from Israel.

The Judaica section of the Jew-
ish Center library was dedicated
in memory of Rabbi Isaac Paneth
at recent services held in the Cen-
ter. Rabbi Paneth died May 28.
Irwin Shaw, Center director,
dedicated the section on behalf of
the Center because "this was a
place that Rabbi Paneth would en-
joy seeing others use."
The Council of Jewish Religious
Schools of Metropolitan Detroit
presented a certificate to Rabbi
Paneth's family for 10 trees to be
planted in the Heroes Forest in
Jerusalem. On the certificate was
inscribed: "In memory of Rabbi
Isaac Paneth, who served Jewish
life with dedication and with a
deep concern for its community in
a modern world."
Rabbi Hugo H. Klein of Cleve-
land, a lifelong friend of Rabbi
Paneth, also participated in the
services.

Knopf's publicity department
stated in relation to "The Algiers
Motel Incident.":
"Mr. Hersey's report from De-
troit has in it both the shock of
revelation and the seeds of action.
The story itself insists that from
this day forward the men entrust-
ed with the responsibility of polic-
ing, judging, and penalizing their
fellow Americans apply the same
standards to all—so" that black
Americans as well as white may
truly perceive 'law and order' as
a benefit, not as a pretext for
the denial and suppression of their
rights as citizens of the United
States."

Susan Ackerman, daughter of
Mrs. Tzily Ackerman of Tel Aviv
and the late Mr. Itzhach Acker-
man, will become the bride of
Barry L. Riklin, son of Mrs. Sylvia
Riklin of Ohio Ave., in a Sept. 19
wedding.
Mr. Riklin, a graduate of Detroit
Institute of Technology, is com-
pleting work on his masters de-
g ree at Eastern Michigan Univer-
sity.

known as "The Algiers Motel In-
cident," the book under this title,
by Pulitzer-Prize-winner John Her-
sey (published by Knopf) has
created the crisis resulting in
postponement of court action
against police involved in that oc-
curence in Detroit during the July
1967 riots. It is charged that the
book prejudices the case before
the trials opening.
Knopf has made it known that
this volume, already approaching
the best seller status, also is be-
ing published as a paperback by
Bantam Books and will be serial-
ized in some newspapers.
Hersey spent months on a de-
tailed investigation — questioning
all the survivors; talking to the
family and friends of the dead
men• listening to the people in
the neighborhood; examining po-
lice and court records; interview-
ing federal, state, city, and police
department officials, including the
three Detroit policemen who were
subsequently indicted.
His meticulous reconstruction of
the incident at the Algiers Motel,
and of the complex social circum-
stances that created the atmos
phere in which it could occur,
calls into question some of the
most fundamental assumptions
