JACKIE KAHANE (that's his
real name) is one lad whose Yeshi-
vah learnings years ago in Mon-
treal have paid off in show busi-
ness . . . The popular comic uses
very little Yiddish expressions in
niteries around the country, but
goes over very big with his slam-
bang type of Yiddish humor at
Jewish organizational affairs . .
A big laugh-getter by Jackie has
been the one about the two Jewish
refugees who passed the home of
John D. Rockefeller, Jr. . . . "If
I had that man's millions," sighed
one of them, "I'd be richer than
he is." . . . "That doesn't make
sense," • the other reminded him.
"If you had Mr. Rockefeller's mil-
lions, you'd be just as rich as he—
not richer," . . "You're wrong,"
the first assured him. "Don't for-
get that I could give Hebrew les-
sons on the side!"
In a Hurry You Bum?
Max Asnas, owner of Broadway's
Stage Door Delicatessen, is a
kindly man and many is the
moocher he has staked to a free
meal. One night a particularly
bedraggled derelict appeared upon
the scene and was promised a
hand-out as soon as a big crowd
of paying customers had been
served. This took longer than the
derelict thought it should, so he
angrily accosted Asnas and cried,
"Hey, I've been waiting for that
meal you promised me now for
a full 20 minutes. How much
longer - will I be ignored?" Asnas
answered, "What's the .matter,
bum?, Are you double parked?"

COMPLETE DINNERS

Fire destroyed the famous restau-
rant, and the gutted structure sets
a sad mood in a community that
utilized the eatery for many func-
tions, as the gathering place for
many friends, as a means far Con-
ducting conferences as well as eel-
ebrating important events.
The eight-alarm fire followed an
explosion at 11:30 p.m. .Monday.
The restaurant fortunately is closed
on Mondays. Firemen fought the
blaze for six hours, and #ffee' of
them were injured.
Damage was estimated at
$300,000.
Few eating places had the- re=
putation of Darby's. After thea-
ter, as a means of winding up-
community functions, for the
purpose of discussing the' city's
and the Jewish community's 'af-
fairs — Darby's was the gather-
ing place and the rendezvous
for many of all ages.
Darby's was managed by Sam
Boesky, member of the Detroit
family that became famous in the
delicatessen business and prog-
ressed into several important res-
taurants.
The Detroit Fire Department ar-
son squad is investigating the
cause of the explosion and fire.
