Pearlman's 'The Zealots of Masada'
Describes 'Story of a Dig' by Yadin;
Dr. Zeitlin Calls Title Misnomer

The major trek of visitors in
Israel today is to the Dead Sea
area so that they may be wit-
nesses of the great dig, the exca-
vations that have made known the
actual naturalness of the ancient
fortress of Masada.
In a descriptive volume, "The
Zealots. of Masada," the well-
known Israeli public relations ad-
viser, Moshe Pearlman, describes
the "story of a dig," and relates
how Prof. Yigael Yadin achieved
the result.
Published by Scribners, this is a
descriptive work of archaeological
skills, of the consistent and per-
sistent efforts of Prof. Yadin and
his many co-workers to get at the
very root of a fortress that served
as a hideout for those who escaped
from the Romans with whom an-
cient Judaea was in battle in the
first century of this era.
Fully illustrated with scores of
pictures which show the excava-
tors at work and the results of
their findings, the Pearlman
book is based on the presenta-
tions made in Yadin's "Masada:
Herod's Fortress and the Zealots'
Last Stand" which was published
by Random House. It covers the
events as they are depicted by
Josephus and fully quoted by
Yadin. Thus the Pearlman story
is more than an account of a
dig—although that is the major
factor in the book. It is also a
history of an era, of Herod, in
the century before the common
era, of Eliezer, the leader of the
Zealots, and the defenders of
Masada.
The Yadin-Pearlman account is
challenged by Prof. Solomon Zeit-
lin in the Jewish Quarterly Review,
who charges that the Sicarii, not
the Zealots, were on Masada and
that they failed to defend them-
selves against the Romans; that
the Romans did not lose a single
life in that last stand.
The charges by Dr. Zeitlin are
presented in a special resume in
this issue of The Jewish News,
on page 2. Dr. Zeitlin calls the
title of Pearlman's book "a
misnomer."
Dr. Zeitlin's comment was on
the title of they book. Declaring
that "there were no Zealots. in
Masada," Dr. Zeitlin commented
in a statement to this reviewer:
"Josephus is the only source
of the history of the Sicarii and
the Zealots. In his works he de-
finitely distinguishes between the
Sicarii and the Zealots. In his
`Wars' he states that the Sicarii
were in Masada. He never men-
tions that the Zealots were in
Masada. Those who maintain
that the Zealots were in Masada
are distorting the history of the
last days of the Second Jewish
Commonwealth. Their asserta-
tions may be ascribed to the fact
that they are not well versed in
the original text of the writings
of Josephus."
Meanwhile, it is interesting to
note that in the Pearlman book
an account also is given of the
Roman fortifications. Pearlman
writes after completing the descrip-
tion of the ancient Masada ruins
on the summit that "there remains

As far as is known, no visas

Vatican's Official Denies Aiding Nazis

ROME — Monsignor Zeno Ig-
nonis, 59, a senior Vatican official
and chamberlain to Pope Paul,
has denied as "ridiculous, wicked
lies" accusations by the Soviet
youth newspaper Komsomolskaya
Pravda of being a former Nazi
collaborator who blessed troops
that had committed war crimes.
The Vatican official is charged
with having been a willing chap-
lain to the Lithuanian nationalist
and German troops in Lithuania
and Byelorussia during World
War II. The paper claimed that
Msgr. Ignonis witnessed mass ex-
ecutions and left behind a packet

of their victims. These were the
ruins of the Romans."
Pearlman's concluding chapter,
"The Roman Fortifications," de-
scribing them, asserts: "The Ro-
man fortifications tell much of the
power of Rome. They tell more
of the power of the human spirit,
as exemplified by the Zealots of
Masada." P e a r l m an provides
much interesting data and valuable
descriptive material about Masada
the historical significance of
which is accepted generally, also
by Prof. Zeitlin. But in view of
Prof. Zeitlin's assertion that "the
story of Masada is an inglorious
chapter in the annals of Jewish
history," the epic is incomplete
without the revelations provided
by Dr. Zeitlin which are fully de-
tailed in Purely Commentary on

Five Major Pacts Signed
for Import of Israeli Foods

NEW YORK (JTA) — The food
division of American Trade and
Industrial Development with Israel,
Inc (.ATID) reported Sunday the
completion of five major a - gree-
ments for importation of Israeli
food products into the United
States and said a number of other
deals were scheduled to be closed
by the end of July. ATID is a
trade and export-promotion body.
Katz-American Food Co. will im-
port tomato products from Miloz,
the Federation of Western Galilee
Kibutzim. The imports will include
peeled plum tomatoes, tomato
paste and tomato sauce and it is
estimated that Americans will buy
between $75,000 and $100,000 worth
of Israeli vegetable products in
1968. The company also will im-
port chilled grapefruit sections,
and the agreement is expected to
produce exports for Israel of al-
most $1,000,000 in the first year.
L. Fatatato, a large U. S. beer
importer, will import 500,000
cases of Israeli beer from Ca-
beer Industries each year for
the next five years, Froumine
biscuits and crackers will be
imported by A. Goldmark and
Sons in a deal which should
reach $100,000 in annual volume,
ATID said.
New agreements have been
made with the World Cheese Co.
and another cheese importer for
Mir cheeses of Bnai Brak. The
volume in processed gouda cheese
spread has already reached $40,000
in the first three months, it was
reported. Pending are agreements
for importing cheeses and specialty
foods, olives, toilet goods, soaps
and additional lines of crackers.

Independent Liberals Cut

Ties With World Union

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The inde-
pendent Liberal Party has cut its
ties with the World Union of Gen-
eral Zionists within the World
Zionist Organization and w i 11
henceforth act as an independent
group in the WZO. The party lead-
ers are Pinhas Rosen and Moshe
Kol, the latter minister of tourism
in the Eshkol cabinet.
The Independent Liberal Party
was created when the original
Liberal Party split, one faction
affiliating itself with Herut
Party to form the Gahal align-
ment in the Knesset and cabinet.
The Independents had affiliated
themselVes within the WZO with
the World Union of General
Zionists headed by Dr. Emanuel
Neumann, of New York.
The Union itself was the result
of a split within the World Con-
federation of General Zionists, a
body now headed by Dr. Israel
Goldstein of Jerusalem and Mrs.
Rose Haiprin of New York. The
Independent Liberals are not rep-
resented on the new Zionist execu-
tive that emerged from the 27th
World Zionist Congress last month.
But they said they would continue
to cooperate with Hanoar Hatzioni,
the General Zionist youth move-
ment.
The Liberal branch that forms
part of Gahal is on the executive
and will continue its affiliation with
the World Union of General Zion-
ists.

Johnson Pledged
Phantoms in '6$,
Eshkol Asserts

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Prime
Minister Levi Eshkol told a group.
of visiting Canadians Sunday that
President Johnson "promised to
give me an answer this year" on
the 50 F-4 Phantom jets that Israel
had requested.• He said the prom-
ise was made when he visited the
President at his Texas ranch last
January and added, "we would be
asking for 100 Phantoms if we
could afford them."
Eshkol's references to Israel's
need for military planes to match
the Soviet build-up of the Egyp-
tian and Syrian air forces were
made in a talk to a delegation
representing the Canadian United
Jewish Appeal. Although there had
been no action on Israel's request
for t h e Phantoms Eshkol noted
"We have to bear in mind
that it took us two years to get
the Skyhawks, so there is still
hope." The Skyhawks are a sub-
sonic jet, slower than the super-
sonic Phantoms, which are Amer-
ica's most advanced operational
fighter planes.
Eshkol said that Israel had 50
Mirage V jets in storage in France
which remain undelivered because
of the continued French arms em-
bargo. He disclosed that the
French offered to refund the $60,-
000,000 deposited there by Israel
in final payment for the planes,
but "we declined because we still
hope to get the Mirages."
