life—and which adorned the let-
terhead on his stationery—was
"the wisdom of peaceful living."
Although he had a heart condi-
tion, he considered himself to
be at peace with himself. He ad-
dressed his letters to the cause
of justice everywhere.
The son of an esteemed yeshiva
rabbi in Poland, Mr. Levitan was
educated in German and Polish, as
well as his native Russian. He
came to this country in 1904, but
eight years later took his wife
with him from Detroit to Minnea-
polis, where he entered the dry-
goods business. His first newspaper
letter—to the Minneapolis Journal
—protested the heavy reparations
the Allies levied against the de-
feated Germans in the Versailles
Treaty. Since then, he had written
more than 5,000 letters to news-
papers, magazines, politicians, in-
dustrialists and statesmen.
Although not an observant Jew,
Mr. Levitan considered himself to
be "the most religious Jew in the
city" because "Judaism is under-
standing and practicing the peace-
ful tenets of the Talmud and
Bible."
