Sen. Griffin's Position on Fortas Brings Attacks; Nazi Party Swipes at Jurist

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Sen.
Robert P. Griffin, Michigan Re-
publican, who spearheading the
fight against confirmation of the
appointment • of Associate Justice
Abe Fortas as chief justice of the
United States, complained that he
was being subjected to heavy pres-
sure which, he hinted, had been
generated by the White House,
and was being accused of anti-
Semitism.

The Senator was quoted as hav-
ing told a meeting of the Republi-
can policy committee that there
were reports his opposition to the
Fortas appointment was due to
anti-Semitism. He denied it, and
all charges of anti-Semitism have
been refuted.

his appointment as chief justice
of the United States, Peter Lis-
agor, Washington correspondent of
the Chicago Daily News, reported.
Lisagor described the stand
taken by Bnai Brith International
President William Wexler support-
ing the Fortas appointment and
opposing the filibuster threatened
by Sen. Griffin. He quoted a Bnai
Brith official as stating that a
campaign like the one against
Justice Fortas, even under res-
pectable auspices, "brings the
bigots, out of the woodwork."
Meanwhile, the former Amer-
