National Leaders Pay Tributes
to Memory of Dr. Morton Robbins
Heads of a number of national'
movements paid tribute this week
to the memory of Dr. Morton Rob-
bins of Brookline, Mass., who died
in Jerusalem on June 21, two days
after the World Zionist Congress
LATE DR. MORTON ROBBINS
which he attended as a delegate
from the Zionist Organization of
America of which he was honorary
vice president.
Funeral services were held in
Brookline on June 27. He was 70.
He is survived by his widow, the
former Claire Yochpa, and a
brother, Aaron J. Robbins of
Springfield, N. J.
Voicing his and the ZOA's pro-
found sorrow at the passing of
Dr. Robbins, ZOA President Jac-
ques Torczyner said that "Dr.
Robbins will be missed by all
those who believed in Zion re-
stored and by those who supported
and enhanced the State of Israel,
among whom he was one of the
pre-eminent builders of Zion."

The well-known Zionist leader
was a vice chairman of the ZOA's
national executive committee. He
served as national chairman of
its youth commission and a past
chairman of the American Zionist
Fund.
A member of the World
Zionist Actions Committee' and
the Maccabi World Executive
Committee, Dr. Robbins was
also founder and president of
Camp Young Judaea in Amherst,
N.H., founder and honorary
president of the New Hampshire
State Zionist Federation and
past president and honorary
president of the New England
Zionist Region.
He had been a member of the
national council of the United
Palestine Appeal, a governor of
the Jewish National Fund and a
director of Keren Haysod, which
was the land-acquisition arm of
the Jewish Agency.
In the field of medicine, Dr.
Robbins was a founder of the
American Physicians Fellowship
of the Israel Medical Association
and a contributor to Ha-Rofe ha-
Ivri (The Hebrew Doctor).
In addition to his many accom-
plishments he was also a poet,
composer, author and linguist. He
was a dynamic and forceful plat-
form personality and was versed
in every aspect of Israel and
Jewish life.
A widely traveled lecturer
throughout the United States on
behalf of the ZOA, he made fre-
quent visits to Israel.
Dr. Robbins was born Oct. 16,
1897, in Balta, the Ukraine, with
the surname Rabinovitz. He came
to the United States in 1922 and
studied pharmacy at Rutgers Uni-
versity. He earned a Doctor of
Medicine at the University of
Liege. Belgium, in 1927 and was
'awarded an honorary Doctorate of
Humane Letters by the Interna-
tional Academy of New York and
London in 1953.
Until he retired in 1964, when
he moved to Brookline, Dr. Rob-
bins had practiced medicine in
Nashua, N. H. During World War
TT, he was lieutenant colonel in
the Army Medical Corns. " ■- n. 1952
he was named Bnai Brith Man of
the Year and Zionist of the Year.

Borman is a member of the
hoard of the Founders Society of
the Detroit Institute of Arts and
is a trustee of Maryglade College
and the Merrill-Palmer Institute
Born in Odessa, Russia, he came
to Detroit in 1923 and in 1929
opened his first grocery store
stocked with $100 worth of mer-
chandise. Now he is chairman of
the executive committee of Bor-
man Food Stores Inc. operators
of a chain of super markets de-
partment stores and drug stores
with over 8,000 employees.
In 1959 Borman received the
Louis Marshall Award in New
York for his work as national
patron of the Society of Jewish
Theological Seminaries. He was
appointed by Governor George
Romney as a member of the
Economic Expansion Council for
the State of Michigan.
