Yeshiva U. Press Publishes
Work by Dr. Sidney B. Hoenig
A marked tribute to the genius
of the late head of Yeshiva Uni-
vprsit,, is erntained in a Yeshiva
University Press
publication,
"Rabbinics a n d
Research: T h e
Scholarship of Dr.
Bernard Revel,'-'
by Dr. Sidney B.
Hoenig.
Supplementing
t h e evaluative
work in this vol-
ume is a prologue
by the man who
Dr. Revel succeeded
Dr. Revel, Dr. Samuel Belkin, who
honors his predecessor under the
title "The Transplanter of Tora on
This Continent."
Dr. Hoenig's compilation of Dr.
Revel's important writings is sup-
plemented by an introductory
essay in which he pays honor to
"the scholarly capacity of a pene-
trating mind, revealing an educa-
tor, teacher, expert researcher,
master in Tora lomdus (learned
acumen) and an expert in scien-
tific-academic investigation of the
new and old in Jewish scholar-
ship."
Dr. Revel's works on ethics,
philosophical thought, Karaitica,
"Restoration of Semikha," "Rab-
binic Novenae," Jewish notables
and other subjects are part of the
collected works that serve to en-
lighten students on major Jewish
subjects.
There is an epilogue to this vol-
ume by Dr. Leon D. Stitskin on
"The Eternal Thirst for Know-
ledge" and added tributes are in-
corporated by Drs. Jacon I. Hart-
stein, Leo Jung, Bernard Lander,
Hirschel Revel and Solomon Zeit-
lin.
Famous Letters
by George Moore
As novelist, poet, dramatist,
George Moore is among the great
figures in world literature.
The significance of his work, his
relationship to many of the other
great world figures, his attitudes
on the works and activities of his
contemporaries, are reflected in an
impressive work, "George Moore
in Transition," publish ed by
Wayne State University Press.
Contaning a valuable comment-
ary by Helmut E. Gerber; associ-
ate professor of English at Purdue
University, this volume incorpor-
ates letters written by Moore dur-
ing the years 1894-1910 to T. Fisher
Unwin, who was Moore's publisher,
and Lena Milman, who is credited
with having stimulated Moore's
interest in Russian literature.
The great value of this work
lies in its inherent commentaries
on works by. Emile Zola, Fedor
Dostoevsky, Iv an Turgenev,
Arthur Symons, George Eliot,
Jane Austen, William Butler
Yeats, James Joyce and others.
Students of world literature will
find great merit in such splendidly
compiled work and in the selection
of valuable material revealing the
personality structure of great
world literary figures.
There is, for example, the quo-
tation from Zola on replies to criti-
cism ("As Zola had reportedly done
on one occasion when asked 'Why
not answer the criticism?' - 'Oh,
no, I cannot answer anybody now,
I have passed the years of de-
fence.' ") There is the comment b3
the editor of the volume that
neither George Eliot nor Hane
Austem were good letter writers.
In its totality "George Moore in
Transition" is significant for its
revealing factors about noted
writers.
