United Foundation Recruitment Corps organizational plans were
reviewed at a meeting to plan enrollment of Torch Drive volunteers
within Jewish women's groups by Mrs. Harry Landsman, representing
Temple Israel; Mrs. Irving Rose and Mrs. Jack Freeman, representing
Infants Service Group. Mrs. Rose is OF Recruitment Corps chairman for
enlisting volunteers among Jewish women's groups for the 1968 Torch
Drive. The campaign, set for Oct. 15 through Nov. 7, will benefit nearly
200 health and community services in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb
counties.
Mrs. Harry Kaplan of Negbah Chapter Pioneer Women will hold
her annual garden party at her home, 15230 Pearson, Oak Park, 12:30
p.m., Wednesday, July 10. Proceeds will go to the Israel Home for Chil-
dren. Members, friends and neighbors are invited.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Plasko of 27056 Sutherland, Southfield, held a
reception in their home, June 23, in honor of their daughter, Mrs. Ber-
nard (Susan) Rubenstein, upon her graduation from Wayne State Uni-
versity College of Education. An excited guest was the graduate's
2-year-old daughter, Lori. Friends and relatives also celebrated the
graduation of Gary Plasko from Southfield High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Panter celebrated their 25th wedding anni-
versary recently at a dinner at the Town and Country Club given by
their children. The Panters were married in Detroit on July 4, 1943.

New Israel Embassy
Minister is In DC

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Shlomo
Argov, who served in Jerusalem
as director of the United States
division of the Israel Foreign Min-
istry has arrived to assume the
post of Minister of the Israeli Em-
bassy here. He w i 11 replace
Ephraim Evron, whose tour of
service here has been completed.
President Johnson met for about
20 minutes today with Evron
to bid him farewell. Evron figured
in the dramatic meetings of
Israeli officials with the Pres-
ident during the tense days before
the Six-Day War.

Elects Officers; Acts on Issues

The Department of Michigan
Jewish War Veterans and its
ladies Auxiliary, at their recent
annual convention, elected Dr.
Leonard Schreiber as department
commander and Mrs. Irving Silk,
as ladies' department president.

Elected to serve with Dr.
Schreiber were: Maury Disner,
Post 530, senior vice commander;
David Gildenberg, Post 716, junior
vice commander; Irving Kempner,

New officers of the Ladies Aux-
iliary are Mesdames Sol Goldberg,

zer, Auxiliary 420, patriotic in-
structor; Sam Wagner, Auxiliary
418, treasurer; Louba Lupiloff,

Appointed as chief of staff for
the ladies' department was the
immediate past department pres-
ident, Mrs. William Greenberg,
Auxiliary 420.

Jewish War Veterans
Past Commander Club

Former department commanders
of the Jewish War Veterans have
formed a Past Department Com-
manders Club. Dr. Leonard
Schreiber, newly elected state
commander of the J.W.V. an-
nounced that the function of this
group will be to aid the depart-
ment and post officers in carry-
ing out their duties.
The Commanders Club was
created in an effort to tap the
leadership and ability of the men
in the Jewish War Veterans whose
performances carried them to the
top position in the department.
The immediate aims of the past
commanders will primarily be
membership, fund raising, and
publicity.
Harold F. Moran was elected
permanent chairman and Jack
Schwartz was appointed secretary.
In attendance at the first planning
session were: Dr. Schreiber; Mor-
ris Disner, department senior vice
commander; and David B. Gild-
enberg, department junior vice
commander.

Resolutions passed in conven-
tion include an appeal to Con-
gress to authorize an increased
budget for planning and imple-
menting a program for veterans
of the Viet Nam Conflict; support
of legislation to require stricter
control of the sale of firearms;
support of legislation for effective
control of water and air pollution;
support of the military commit-
ment in Vietnam and the use of
every conceivable channel to urge
a peaceful settlement; an appeal
to the government of the U.S. to
make available to the State of Is-
rael the necessary military mate-
rials to counter-balance the flow
of Soviet arms to the Arab world;
nn appeal to the West German
government to encourage positive
actions and programs between
West Germany and the western
European community towards
rooting out the vestiges of Nazism;
a pledge to continue opposing the
subversive influences of the radi-
cal right and left; an expression
of full support for civil rights
legislation; support of an appeal
by our government to the go-ern-
ment of Poland to revoke its
rolicy of Hitlerism and an appeal-
to Soviet authorities to declare a
'policy of eradicating anti-Semi-
tism.

Berman is JWV's
`Man of the Year'

The Department of Michigan
Jewish War Veterans, in session
at their 27th annual state conven-
tion, Sunday, honored former state
Department Commander, Jack
Berman of Stratford Oak Park,
with a plaque as their "Man of
the Year." Berman is presently
chief of staff and convention chair-
man.
Berman w a s

from the Jewish
W a r Veterans
Bowling League.
The honor was
an unprecedented
testimonial to
him for "his un-
selfish, meritori- Jack Berman
ous and devoted service to the
high ideals and community serv-
ices" in which JWV participates.
In his 20th year with the Jewish
War Veterans, Berman has held
office as state department com-
mander, national deputy awards
officer, and is presently serving
as a delegate of the JWV to the
Allied Veterans Council and as
vice president of the Memorial
Home Association.
Also honored was Commander
Louis Benton. Benton is a past
commander of Detroit Post 135.
He represented the Department of
Michigan in February at the na-
tional executive committee meeting
of JWV, held in Israel.
