Hussein Tells Magazine Jordan Rebuilds Air Force With British, U.S. ,Planes (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) LONDON (JTA)—King Hussein of Jordan disclosed in an inter- view in a British aviation journal that his country is rebuilding its Air Force with British and Amer- ican military planes and expects to complete the first phase next year. The Jordanian Air Force was destroyed by Israeli aircraft in the first hours of the June, 1967 war. According to the interview in the magazine "Flight," when the phase is completed the Jordanian Air Force will have two squadrons of Hawker Hunter close support aircraft and one squadron of United States Starfighter inter- ceptors. New air bases are being built in Jordan. The King said that a second phase in the rebuild- ing process may be the purchase of the British Hawker Siddeley "Harrier" jump-jet tactical fighter planes. He assured the interviewer that Jordan had no intention of turning away from its traditional arms suppliers, Britain and the U.S., to Russia or any other country. Rabbi Segal, speaking at the 32nd annual convention of the as- sociation of Orthodox Rabbis here, blamed "these Arab students for causing the recent assassination of Sen Robert F. Kennedy due to their inflammatory, irrational and brazen hate activities." Rabbi Segal, in his acceptance speech to the 600 delegates, appealed to At- torney General Ramsey Clark to "undertake an intensive investiga- tion of the nature of Arab propa- ganda and action on the campuses and to suppress any manifesta- tions, illegality, abuse and violence SALE reg. to $8 Shorts, Shells, I I Fun Tops $5 I I SALE reg. $12 to $19 Pant Dresses I $1 0 MI 2-4150 I 154 S. He said "it is absurd to permit these students to castigate the American government which is ex- tending to them extraordinary op- portunities for study, learning and travel. They are abusing the hos- pitality and generosity of the Am- erican taxpayer who is defraying the costs of their lengthy stay in the United States." Rabbi Segal called upon the State Department "to revoke the scholarships of these 7,000 Arab students who are not adhering to the requirements of the moral and legal code which is explicit in the grant of financial assistance. According to press dispatches received here today, the unsigned letter called Dr. Goldstuecker a "Z i o n i s t hyena" and a "disgusting Jew" and warned him that "your time will come, your days are reckon- ed." Dr. Goldstuecker, who is chair- man of Czechoslovakia's Writers Union, attributed the attack to hard-line opponents of the new Communist regime's liberal pol- icies probably associated with former President Antonin Novo- tony. The letter alleged that the democratization now taking place in Czechoslovakia was the work of Jews like Dr. Goldstuecker. Dr. Goldstuecker himself a victim of Stalinist persecution in the 1950s, expressed the belief that the anony- mous writer was a member of the state security apparatus, because the language of the letter was much the same as that used against him and other defendants in the anti-Semitic atmosphere of the purge trial of Rudolf Slansky, former Secretary-General, of the Czechoslovak Communist Party, executed in the 1950s. The letter and Dr. Goldstueck- er's article were prominently fea- tured in the party newspaper. Ac- cording to some sources, it was reported here, progressive Corn- munists are concerned that the democratization process so far has benefitted mainly intellectuals and journalists like Dr. Goldstuecker, more than the masses of the popu- lation. Jews hold leading positions in ciech politics and out the length and breadth of the U.S.," Rabbi Segal declared. Rabbi Segal warned the State Department and the Department of Justice that "failure to stem this type of Arab campus involve- ment will inevitably result in other homicidal tragedies, weaken the diplomatic status of the nation, and create an environment of mutual hostility among our popu- lace. It is incument upon all of our government officials to pre- vent such catastrophes by adopt- ing drastic means to curb this well financed Arab machine." 8440 W. ...has a better idea Because they have IRV KATZ McDonald Ford 14240 W. 7 Mile Road at the Lodge X-Way DI 1-3800 1=1 ■ 11111Mb VACATION TimE LEISURE SPORTS ■■■ status of all Israeli citizens. He reaffirmed that the Is- raeli Arabs enjoy political and economic status, that Arabs re- ceive equal pay with Jews in Israel and have economic equal- ity. Expressing regret over propa- ganda that is spread by Arab countries he asserted that the rumors stemming from outside areas are the cause of misunder- standings. Replying to a question from a Christian clergyman regarding charges that Israel prevented Arabs from praying at holy places, he categorically denied the rumors and said that, on the contrary, only the outside Arab propagand- ists had spread such rumors, that there is absolute religious free- dom in Israel and that Arab pol- iticians in the Arab states had ordered a boycott of religious places in order to give the im- pression that Israel is discriminat- ing. He said such orders are not being adhered to. There were reports of some threats to Mayor Kteily by anti- Israel university students, but all of his appearances ended peace- fully. As mayor of Nazareth, Kteily heads one of the most important municipal centers in Israel. An Arab of the Greek Orthodox faith, he has lived all of his life in Upper Gailee.
