OBITUARIES

Veteran JDC Executive Yitzhak Kleinbaum, 58

GENEVA — Yitzhak Kleinbaum,
an executive of the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee and a member of
the organizations' staff for close
to 20 years, died in Paris Monday
at age 58.
According to Louis D. Horwitz,
JDC director-general, "Ill-health,
which Mr. Kleinbaum suffered
earlier in May, continued to plague
him as he ran the JDC emergency
operations almost single handedly
from his Paris office during the
weeks of riots and strikes that
recently engulfed France. Ignoring
his growing fatigue, he arranged
for transport in a transportless
city, for cash to reach refugees in
spite of closed banks, and numer-
ous other services, to bring relief
to the sick, aged and handicapped
left stranded by the upheavals all
over the French capital. Exhaust-
ed by the strain, he finally entered
the hospital on June 14, where he
was struck down the following
night by a heart attack from which
he was not to recover.
"Yitzhak Kleinbaum lived and
died in the service of the Jewish
people. He is deeply mourned by
the countless men and women
who had the privilege of work-
ing with him and being served
by him, For JDC, his loss is
irreplaceable."
Born in Poland in 1910, Mr.
Kleinbaum reached Palestine in
1941 and was engaged in welfare

programs until he joined the JDC
in 1948 as chief of the resettle-
ment section in Italy.
He was transferred a year later
to the immigration services of
JDC at its overseas headquarters
in Paris. In 1952, he was trans-
ferred to Morocco as assistant di-
rector of JDC operations and re-
turned to Europe in 1956 as JDC's
assistant director for community
development.
In 1957, he became JDC repre-
sentative in Latin America, an
appointment he held until 1964,
when he joined the State of Israel
Bond organization for the subse-
quent three years.
In the wake of the Six-Day War,
expulsion and persecution forced
thousands of Jews in Arab coun-
tries to seek new havens, and
Mr. Kleinbaum returned to the
JDC to help run its emergency
services. In Rome in the summer
of 1967, he took charge of care and
relief for Libyan Jews when prac-
tically the whole of that country's
Jewish community streamed into
Italy in one month.
He went on to Paris this Febru-
ary as liaison officer for the JDC
overseas headquarters in Geneva
to coordinate JDC aid with the
French Jewish welfare agencies
who faced a growing caseload
from North Africa.
