LISTENING

35 YEARS AGO,' Mannie Mackie
walked into B. Berkowitz and Sons
Wholesale Grocers, to visit Nate
Berkowitz . . . Mannie was stunned
by a young girl who worked there
. • . Her name was Faye Zatkin
. . • He asked her for a date and
was promptly turned down . . .
Two weeks later, he went to a_
dance with Nate at Eastwood Ball-
room, saw Faye and danced the
entire evening with her . . . It was
their first date and two years
later they became man and wife
. . . Some of the fellows working
at the Michigan Trading Corp., of
which B. Berkowitz & Sons was
a division, included Paul Zucker-
man, Pincus "Pinky" Greenberg,
Max York, Sammy Tensser and
Charlie Matler, one of the owners
. . Hanging around included Irv-
ing "Sleepy" Radner. Sidney Fish-
er and Archie Silverman . . . All
the fellows named are living . . .
with once-in-a-while memories of
those "good old days." . Mannie
also eventually went to work there
. . . He and Faye celebrated their
33rd anniversary last week.

DURING DINNER AT home last!
week, six-year old Gerald Brody,
son of Oscar and Miriam Brody,
was asked by his mother what he
had learned in school that day
. . . and the little lad replied, "I
learned a kid bettern' to call me a
baby!"

MORRIE FELSENFELD offers
his philosophical sentiments in
poetic fashion to dear friends Joe
and Mickey Pearlman and Dr.
HoWrard and Phyllis Chazen . . .
However, his fine philosophy may
apply to all married folks . . . "To
my dear friends Joe and Howard
—Mickey and Phyllis, too . . . A
simple philosophy tested and true
. . . It may sound trite. but I know
it's right . . . And I'm sure that
it will work for you . . . Love each
other deeply, treat each other nice
. • . With the deepest of humility,
may I offer this advice . Learn
to bend and compromise, elimi-
nate much strife . .. Learn to be
compassionate and live a happy
life . .. So give these words some
thought, and think forever more
. . . That it's wiser to negotiate,
than slam the final door."

A PERFECT EXAMPLE of no
such animal as a confirmed bach-
elor is Bill Ross, like so many
other "confirms" it seems. "I Do"
session for Bill and Annette Kon-
beim was this past May without
too many people knowing about it.

TALK ABOUT LARGE class re-
unions! It'll sure be something
when the Southfield High Class of
1968 has theirs . . . The graduation
exercises recently at Cobo Hall
numbered 908 blue and white cap
'n' gowners.

STORY IS TOLD BY Sam Geller
about the fellow who is a more
serious type of father . . . and
likes to have heart-to-heart talks
with his young son. . . Among
other things, he said, "My boy,
before I met your mother I never
kissed a girl. Will you be able to
say the same thing to your son?"
... And they boy answered, "Sure,
dad, but not with such a straight
face!"
