Local Jewish Legi onnaires Subject

Michigan members of the Jewish
Legion, the World War I unit that
fought to liberate Palestine from
the Turks 50 years ago, are the
subject of a series of articles
compiled by Allen A. Warsen and
published in the current issue of
"Michigan Jewish History," jour-
nal of the Jewish Historical Society
of Michigan.
The Jewish Legion was organ-
ized by the British government in
August 1917 with the purpose of
driving the Turks, which had join-
ed the Central Powers (Germany
and Austria-Hungary) out of Pal-
estine. The area was of immense
importance because control of
Palestine would lead to the control
of the Dardanelles, which was
under Turkish rule.
The Jewish Legion consisted of
three battalions of Royal Fusi-
liers. The 38th Batallion, under the
command of Lt. Col. John Henry
Patterson, was recruited in Eng-
land; the 39th Battalion, formed in
the Western Hemisphere, mainly
in the United States, under the
command of Lt. Col. Eliezar Mar-
golin; and the 40th Battalion, or-
ganized in Palestine, lead by Lt.
Col. Frederick Dudley Samuel.
In all, the three battalions
