NPD Eliminates Deputy 'with Nazi Past From Summit

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire

BONN — A deputy leader of the
extreme right-wing National Dem-
ocratic Party who has a Nazi rec-.
ord going back to the pre-World
- War II era, is being kept out of
sessions of the party's leaders in
which high level strategy is being
mapped for next year's national
elections.
Officially, the absence of Deputy
Wilhelm Jutman has been ex-
plained by the fact that he is in
the hospital. It was reliably
" learned, however, that his partici-
pation, in the party counsels would
embarrass NPD Chairman Adolph
von Thadden, who is trying to rid
the party image of the taint of ex-
tremism.
Jutman, who served a long
prison sentence beginning in
1947, has been accused of taking
part in the notorious "Crystal
Night" of November 1938 'when
synagogues were burned and
Jewish business establishments
were wrecked all over Germany.
Von Thadden, meanwhile, an-
nounced at a press conference that
the NPD will spend between 9- and
10,000,000 marks (more than $2,-

Levin's Visit to U.S.
Postponed Week?

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

NEW YORK — A two-member
Soviet Jewish religious delegation
which had been scheduled to ar-
rive in the United States Monday
but did not show up, is coming
next week, the American Council
for Judaism said Tuesday. A
spokesman for the council, spon-
sor of the visit, told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency that his or-
ganization had received confirma-
tion of the visit Tuesday morning
but declined to comment on the
reason for the delay.
However, there was considerable
doubthere that the delegation could
still be expected. A State Depart-
men spokesman said that late Mon-
day afternoon the department had
received no word from the U.S.
Embassy in Moscow on the issu-
ance of visas to Rabbi Yehuda Leib
Levin, of Moscow, and Cantor Da-
vid Stiskin of Leningrad. This in-
dicated, according to the spokes-
man, that no visa applications had
been made.
The Council spokesman said that
the council has a "commitment"
that Rabbi Levin and Cantor Stis-
kin will still come to New York.
The council, at the same time, na-
nounced postponement of its June
13 meeting at Town Hall here at
which Rabbi Levin was scheduled
to appear "because of his delay in
departing from Moscow."
The council asked that ticket
holders retain their tickets, which
will be honored on a date and
place to be announced within a
few days. "The meeting is ex-
pected to take place next week,"
the council said.
Bill Gottlieb, public relations di-
rector of the council said that the
council, which has been widely
attacked for sponsorship of the
Visit, has received several threat-
ening' telephone calls in connection
with it. Physical violence was
threatened by one anonymous call-
er. Other callers said there would
be anti-council pickets and demon-
strations.

MOmorial Being Designed
to Honor Lithuanian Jews

LONDON (JTA) — A number of
Soviet sculptors have submitted
ideas.: for a memorial monument
to be'erected on a site in Kaunas,
Soviet Lithuania, where tens of
thousands of Lithuanian Jews and
JeWish deportees from abroad
were 'killed by the Nazis and their
local collaborators during World
War IL
According to reports reaching
here, plans for the memorial are
now on exhibition at the museum
of art in Vilna, capital of the Lith-
uanian Soviet Republic. No date
has been given on when work on
the memorial will start.

000,000 in its campaign for seats
in the Bundestag, West Germany's
lower house. The party, which has
been described here and abroad
as "neo-Nazi," holds seats in seven
of the country's 11 provincial leg-
islatures. Its electoral progress has
been viewed with growing alarm.
Hopes entertained by the NPD
that a new election would have to
be called in Baden-Wurttemberg,
scene of the party's greatest elec-
toral triumph, were apparently dis-
sipated Tuesday when it was dis-
closed that the Social Democratic
Party had voted, by a large ma-

jority, to continue its coalition
with the Christiati - Democratic
Union in the state.
The neo-Nazi party won 9.8 per
cent of the seats in the state legis-
lature April 28, mainly at the ex-
pense of the Social Democrats.
Withdrawal of the Social Demo-
crats from the coalition would
have made new elections neces-
sary since the Christian Demo-
crats did not have a majority by
themselves and the only other
party with whom they could enter
a coalition, the Free Democrats,
refused to join them.
