There are also reports of even richer fields, discovered in re- cent weeks, which may double pro- duction by the end of this year. Egypt's two major refineries, reduced to rubble in an artillery exchange with Israel in October, are being repaired. A third refinery, the least seri- ously damaged, is back in opera- tion. That number does not include the victims of the vanished submarine "Dakar." and the battleship "Elath," sunk by Egyptians with Russian missiles, nor does the num- ber include the soldiers and pilots who perished after the Six-Day War. A third of the number died in Israel's reprisal expeditions against Arab terrorists, and in military training accidents. The greatest loss of life occurred in the 1948 war-4,477; the smallest fraction of casualties-191—was sustained in the 1956 Sinai action. Between the 1948 and 1956 con- flicts, Israel mourned 1,176 com- batants, and 893 in the period be- tween 1956 and last June.
