TEL AVIV — Finance Minister
Pinhas Sapir Tuesday explained
.the need for a new volutary se-
curity loan to permit Israel to
keep pace with arab rearmament.
In an interview published in the
evening newspaper, Yediot Ahro-
not, Sapir said "Our people must
recognize the fact that the war is
not yet over and it costs a lot of
money. Israel cannot permit itself
to lag behind."
He said the security budget for
the current fiscal year has been
set at 2,200,000,000 pounds ($628,-
540,000). Last June's Six-Day war
cost Israel 3,000,000,000 pounds
($857,000,000) which must be paid
up within three years, Sapir said.

Egypt's production to its pre-June
level of 120,000 barrels a day.
There are also reports of even
richer fields, discovered in re-
cent weeks, which may double pro-
duction by the end of this year.
Egypt's two major refineries,
reduced to rubble in an artillery
exchange with Israel in October,
are being repaired.
A third refinery, the least seri-
ously damaged, is back in opera-
tion.
Egypt now plans to lay a 42-inch
pipeline along the Suez Canal.
As Israel is going ahead with her
pipeline. • Egypt's interest in the
project increases.

7,506 Lose Lives
in Israel's 3 Wars

JERUSALEM (ZINS)—Since the
1948 War of Independence Israel
has lost a total of 7,506 soldiers.
That number does not include the
victims of the vanished submarine
"Dakar." and the battleship
"Elath," sunk by Egyptians with
Russian missiles, nor does the num-
ber include the soldiers and pilots
who perished after the Six-Day
War.
A third of the number died in
Israel's reprisal expeditions against
Arab terrorists, and in military
training accidents. The greatest
loss of life occurred in the 1948
war-4,477; the smallest fraction
of casualties-191—was sustained
in the 1956 Sinai action.
Between the 1948 and 1956 con-
flicts, Israel mourned 1,176 com-
batants, and 893 in the period be-
tween 1956 and last June.
