Jewish Singer's Tour
Used by Soviets to
Prove 'Jewish Culture'
LONDON (JTA) — The Soviet
propaganda machine is using con-
certs by a popular Yiddish singer
to bear out the Russian claim that
Soviet Jews have "cultural facili-
ties" if they want them, according
to reports here from the USSR.
The singer is Nechama Lifshitz,
of Vilna, who has been on a highly
successful concert tour of various
Jewish centers in Russia. But her
repertoire avoids any music re-
motely connected with Israel or
composed by anyone outside of
the Communist bloc, according to
the reports. Most of Miss Lif-
schitz' songs are in the prewar
traditional genre. One or two new
Yiddish songs were written by
Soviet composers with words by

WASHINGTON (J T A) — The
United States government in-
formed Israel that it was "con-
cerned" over Israeli military oc-
cupation of Tiran Island at the en-
trance of the Straits of Tiran.
Robert McCloskey, spokesman
for the State Department, an-
nounced that "we have noted with
concern Israeli press reports that
Israeli forces had occupied the Is-
land of Tiran." He disclosed that
formal representations had been
made to the Israeli government.
The department described the
island as Saudi Arabian territory.
Egypt's closing of the Strait of
Tiran in May 1967 was an immedi-
ate cause of the Six-Day War. The
strait is the exit from the Gulf of
Aqaba to the Red Sea.
The Israel foreign ministry con-
firmed a report that the U.S. Em-
bassy in Tel Aviv had asked Israel
to withdraw its forces on the is-
land.
Maj. Gen Itzhak Rabin, Is-
rael's ambassador to the United
States, reported to the Israel
Cabinet on the progress of U.S.-
Israeli relations. It w a s Gen.
Rabin's first in-person report to
the cabinet since he took up his
post in Washington earlier this
year.
According to reliable sources,
Gen. Rabin expressed confidence
in continued American support for
Israel and said that top echelon
American policy-makers feel
strongly that a peaceful settlement
of the Middle East dispute is pos-
sible but are unhappy over Israel's
insistence on direct talks with the
Arabs as the only acceptable form
of peace negotiations.

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The im-
portation of capital into Israel
rose to $778,000,000 in 1967 as
against $475,000,000 in 1966, the
Treasury reported. It said sale of
Israel government bonds abroad
jumped from $122,000,000 in 1966
to $230,000,000 in 1967. Israel's ob-
ligations abroad in the form of

Bonds stood at $718,000,000 at the
end of last year, the treasury
said. Foreign currency reserves
rose from $731,000,000 to $947,000, -
000.
Minister of Labor Yigal Anon
announced that unemployment in
Israel had dropped by almost two-
thirds in the past year. From a
high of 42,000 in March, 1967, he
said, the figure had fallen to just
under 17,000 in March of this year.
Included in that figure, he noted,
were some 5,000 "hard-core" cases,
mainly unskilled workers. There
were labor scarcities, he said, in
electronics, nursing and clerical
jobs.
David Golan, director-general of
the Ministry of Commerce and In-
dustry, told the press that while
there had been no rise in exports
during the first four months of this
year, a careful study of market
conditions supported a 1968 target
of $470,000,000 in exports. coin-
pared to $430,000,000 in 1967.
