Israeli Play on Broadway Reminds
Us of a Story-or Two-About Solomon

By DAVID SCHWARTZ

(Copyright. 1968, JTA Inc.)

For those who can't go to Israel,
Israel is coming , here.
You can buy Jaffa oranges in
America today, and on Broadway,
they are now playing a piece which
had its premiere in Tel Aviv.
The play, "I am Solomon," writ-
ten by the Israeli Samuel Grone-
man, is hailed by all the New York
critics, from those of the Times
all the way to Walter Winchell.
The plot of the story is simple.
King Solomon meets a shoemaker,
Yoni, and decides to change places
with him. Part of Solomon's search
for wisdom. So King Solomon starts
mending shoes and the cobbler
sits in the palace, ruling the coun-
try. Solomon soon discovers that
what is regarded as wisdom in
the palace — in government cir-
cles — is regarded as foolishness
in the marketplace.

Probably the story that he had
a thousand arose through a re-
porter's error. The reporter must
have said, "Your Majesty, it is
said you have a thousand better
halves."

Solomon answered: What!
thousand better halves!

The reporter omitted the ex-
clamation points. Anyway, if he
had a thousand better halves, it
could only be 500 wives, for it takes
two halves to make one.

Honor Dr. A. L. Sachar

Brandeis University Pr e s i dent
Abram L. Sachar receives an en-
graved silver tray from Brandeis
Student Council President Eric Yof-
fie, '69, of Worcester, Mass., in ap-
preciation and recognition of his
20 years as president of the Uni-
versity. The tray which was given
in behalf of the entire student
body was inscribed: "To Dr.
Abram Sachar w h o in 20-years,
made a dream into a reality." Dr.
Sachar w h o assumed the presi-
dency when Brandeis was founded
in 1948 steps down from that post
this September to become chancel-
lor of the University.

HOLLYWOOD — Melville Shav-
elson has a sleeper with his latest
motion picture, "Yours, Mine and
Ours," for which he signs re-
sponsible as co-author of the
screenplay and as director. It is
an unusual wholesome situation-
comedy dealing with the real-life
story of the Beardsley family of
northern California — a widower
with ten children and a widow
with eight offspring, who bind to-
gether in matrimony and -common
housekeeping for twenty plus one.
Shevelson admits that the yarn
had to be switched around and
story of rather ordinary people
dramatized in order to make the
more glamorous for the screen.
and make the starring parts suit-
able for Lucille Ball and Henry
Fonda. Shavelson cleverly avoid-
ed the corny and obvious and
throughout maintained a high
level of entertainment. "Yours,
Mine and Ours" is pure fun, not
a tear-jerker or a morality play.
Shevelson's intellect is best suit-
ed for light comedy. In line with
his current offering, he plans to
do in Japan, filmization of Dun-
can Thorp's novel, "Only Akiko,"
dealing with events during the
American occupation of the island
kingdom following World War II,

in a light-hearted, humorous spirit
of mutual understanding. The
"Only" of the title refers to those
Japanese girls who live only with
one GI — cooking and caring for
him and even occasionally fall-
ing in love with him — therefore
called "onlys."
A native of Brooklyn, Shavelson
was a Hollywood radio and gag
writer at the ripe age of twenty.
Writing the radio show for Bob
Hope in 1938, he graduated to
screenplay collaboration of such
Samuel Goldwyn pictures
as
Hope's "The Princess and the
Pirate," and Danny Kaye's "Won-
der Man" and "Kid from Brook-
lyn." Among the films he later
wrote and directed are "The Five
Pennies" and "A New Kind of
Love." He failed when he tried
to branch out into serious drama
with "Cast a Giant Shadow," the
story of Mickey Marcus, which
he w r o t e, co-produced with
Michael Wayne, and directed on
location in Israel — a country he
loves very dearly.
