20—Friday, June 7, 1968 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Monteith Professor Performs Valuable Service With Issue on Ghetto Uprising Eshkol Would Run Again for Premier TEL AVIV (ZINS)—In an inter- view for the newspaper, "Davar," Prime Minister Levi Eshkol hinted he would accept another term of office in the wake of the forthcom- ing Knesset elections, if drafted by the party. He predicted no changes in gov- ernment until voting time. As to the future of the Jewish Agency, he reiterated the thesis- that its continued existence was imperative because the agency is an instrumentality for fund rais- ing, and is not a conventional source for government income. • He also expressed himself in favor of immigration and absorp- tion which should remain the func- tion of the agency. In the area of foreign relations, the premier voiced an optimistic view about the traditionally friendly ties between the United States and Israel in the future, regardless • of possible changes in - 'the White House. Nor was Eshkol troubled about the Russian atti- tude toward Israel, and offered the opinion that Moscow was not interested in obliterating Israel, and therefore will not support the Arabs in their destructive plans. Israelis Oppose Return of Land Without Talks TEL AVIV (ZINS)—A country- wide poll revealed that 87 per cent of Israelis were against returning the liberated territories to the Arabs without prior direct negoti- ations, while 78 percent favored such action if the Arabs agreed to establish peace. However, 95 per cent expressed the opinion that regardless of the circumstances, Jerusalem must re- main within the boundaries of Is- rael. Similarly 88 per cent support- ed retention of the Golan Heights, 61 per cent the Sharm-a-Sheikh, 47 percent the Western part of Jor- dan, and only 21 per cent recom- mended integration of the Sinai peninsula. Also 50 per cent held that if Israel incorporated the • occupied territories, the resident. Arabs given voting rights, while 39 per cent opposed the idea. Eighty per cent of the polled agreed that Israel was making every effort to reach a just peace. 170,000 in 20 Years Depart From Israel JERUSALEM (ZINS) — A sta- tistical survey conducted by Ha' . aretz reveals that since the estab- lishment of the state, 170,000 Jews have left the country — an average of 8,500 per year. The study notes that the figure would be correct if "yordim" were defined as Israelis who live abroad for two years or more. The question arises, the survey notes, with regard to the many cases of Israelis who have lived in other countries for periods of 5 and 10 years, but finally returned home. Among the countries which have received the emigres, are chiefly the United States, Canada and France. - To young people, for whom pro- and such volumes as Raul Hil- test has become a part of their life berg's "The Destruction of Euro- pattern, the Warsaw Ghetto Up- pean Jewry," Chaim Kaplan's rising is a mere line in a history "Scroll of Agony" and the memoirs . text—if it is anything at all. of survivor Alexander Donat.
