28—Friday; May 24, 1968 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Kovinsky-Kowal Rites Local Petition Drive Launched Held at Adas Shalom to Protest Polish Anti-Semitism A massive local petition effort denouncing the emergence of a po- litically inspired and government- sanctioned anti-Semitic campaign in Poland was announced by Lawr- ence Gubow, president of the Jew- ish Community Council. Gubow stated that in the first days of the campaign, conducted by local or- ganizational members, hundreds of signatures have already been col- lected. The petitions also call upon the Polish govern- ment to permit Jews to emigrate from Poland. Working cooperatively with the Community Council in this effort is the Shaarit Haplayta, a Coun- cil member organization com- posed of survivors of the Holo- caust. Shaarit Haplayta volun- teers are conducting the petition drive under the chairmanship of Dr. John J. Mames. The presi- dent of the organization, Martin Rose, states that his group will launch a door-to-door campaign in Wayne and South Oakland counties in an effort to enlist thousands of local residents in the petition drive. In addition, Gubow announced that plans are under way to stage a community wide protest rally as a further expression of Detroit Jewry's concern. Zionist Organization of Amer- ica President JACQUES TOR- CZYNER, was a members of a delegation representing the Confer- ence of President of Major Jewish Organizations, at a special meeting held in London this week. This meeting was to prepare for a con- ference of Jewish Organizations, which is being called by Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, and scheduled to be held in Jerusalem during the summer of 1968.
