Israeli Arab Birth Rate
Triples That of Jews

Fri day, May 24, 1968-9

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

JERUSALEM (ZINS)—Mortality
rate among Israel's Arabs dropped
from 20 per 1,000 in 1948 to 6.1.
This is equal to the Jewish rate—
one of the lowest in the world.
Arab localities in Israel are
served by 71 mother-and-child cen-
ters. Child mortality dropped from
68 per 1,000 live birth in 1952 to
40. (In 1962, Egypt's rate was 134.)
Natural increase among Israel's
Arabs was 44.5 per 1,000 in 1965,
compared with 34 in 1952. This is
almost three times the Jewish
rate.
In 1967, there were 362 Arab
educational institutions — 61 in
1948.

Destiny stood still a Year ago. We will never forget those critical
days when the fate of Israel—its very life—hung in. the balance. The
history of the Jewish people seemed to come to a standstill.

But the people of Israel did not stand still. They closed ranks to
defend the nation. Men like Moshe Dayan and Menachem Begin were
brought into the "wall-to-wall" coalition Cabinet to cope with the
emergency.

A member of every Knesset since 1948 and a vigorous champion of
Israel's independence, Cabinet Minister Begin now shares the weighty
responsibility of maintaining Israel's strength in the difficult search for
peace.

A year ago, American Jewry did not stand still. Along with other
major communities, the people of Detroit responded to the crisis in an
unprecedented wave of economic support.

As we salute the heroic defenders of Israel on the first anniversary
of the decisive Six Days in June, as we turn our eyes toward the unified
Holy City of Jerusalem, we are unified in our determination that Israel
shall live, that Israel shall thrive and fulfill its potential andprophecy as
a "light unto the nations."

Detroit will mark the first anniversary of the historic Six Days in
June on June 4th at Cobo Hall. Make your plans now to attend and to
