WASHINGTON, D. C.—All five presidential candidates favor mili- tary aid to Israel and measures to strengthen U.S. policy in the Near East. This general agreement was re- flected in statements given to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), for publica- tion in Near East Report. AIPAC invited the candidates to submit their views in order to make it clear that there would be no retreat in U.S. policy after the elections. Pointing to the peren- nial tendency of Arab leaders to hope that presidential elections will result in a change in U.S. policy to Israel's disadvantage, I. L. Kenen, editor of Near East Re- port, commented that "what the candidates say is important . . . because of the impact that their statements might have on thinking and policy in the Near East."
