Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) New Czech Stamp Series Marks Jewry's Millenium (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) PRAGUE—The Czechoslovak Post Office has issued a series of postage stamps commemorating the 1.000th anniversary of the Czech Jewish community which will be celebrated officially a year from now. The issuance of the series, each containing six stamps with a tiny inset of a traditional menora (ritual can- delabra) is seen here as further evidence of the more liberal attitude toward the Jews taken by the new Czech regime. (The director of the Czechoslovak travel bureau in North America announced in New York Monday that the Czech-Jewish millenium will be celebrated next year with official approval and subsidies. The previous regime in Prague withdrew its support from the celebrations, which were to have been held this spring, following the June Arab-Israel war.) The subject matter on the new Czech stamps includes Jewish ritual objects and synagogue decorations, .a re- production of the 700-year-old Alt-Neue Synagogue in Prague, an ancient tombstone in the Prague Jewish cemetery and a portrait of Rabbi David Ganz, _ a 16th Century astronomer, mathematician and Talmudic scholar. Jordanians Reported Turning Against El Fatah Marauders (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) LONDON — A British correspondent reported from Amman Tuesday that public sentiment in Jordan may be turning against El Fatah marauders as retaliatory action by Israel for guerrilla activity has created havoc and destruction on Jordanian soil. According to Richard Beeston ; in a dispatch to the Daily Telegraph, claimed "victories" against Israel occur mainly in the immigration of the guerrillas. But they are given credence by expensive propaganda material printed in Damascus and circulated among the Jordanians. While most Arabs desperately believe the El Fatah claims "among some farmers in the (Jordan) valley who have lost their homes, their lands and their livelihoods, there is bitterness against the guerrillas whose activites have brought ruthless retaliation," Beeston wrote. ConfusinEs UNITED NATIONS — Upon the arrival Wednesday of Ambassador Gunnar V. Jar- ring, UN special peace envoy to the Middle East, strenuous efforts were still being made by the Afro-Asian bloc to achieve some action against Israel either at the Security Council or the General Assembly. The official reason given by the UN for Jarring's visit is that he was coming here to continue his mission and for consultation. Officially, the UN has thus far said nothing about last week's press reports to the effect that Egypt had agreed with him at a Cairo meeting to partic- ipate in further discussions regarding the Middle East under his auspices in New York. Israel had already accepted such a proposal, and it is believed Jordan was ready to accept the Jarring suggestion that the talks be held in New York rather than through personal visits by Jarring to the capitals of Egypt, Jordan and Israel. Over a period of five months, Jarring had paid about 42 visits to Cairo, Amman and Jeru- salem in pursuit of his mission. He will report on the status of his mission to Secretary-General U Thant, but no date has been announced for the beginning of his talks with the representatives of Israel, Egypt and Jordan. However, Cairo has made it clear that the conferences with Jarring will not include face-to-face talks between the Arabs and Israel. Meanwhile, efforts to move the Security Council off dead center on its suspended Middle East debate proceded here. The Council, which recessed its Middle East debate last week, has not yet met for resumption of that debate. On Wednesday, Souheil Chammas, Lebanon's charge d'af- faires, who complained to the Security Council that Israel had violated the 1949 armistice agree- ment last Sunday by shelling a Lebanese village just beyond Israel's northern border. conferred with Thant. While the Lebanese complaint had not requested a Security Council meeting, Cham- mas is believed to have urged Thant that some action against Israel be taken by the council. The document was taken into the embassy by a deputation consisting of Chief Rabbi Immanuel Jakobovits of the British Commonwealth; Michael Fidler, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews; Sir Barnett Janner, MP, chairman of the board's foreign affairs department; Sir Samuel Fisher, board vice president; and Simon Frisner, chairman of the Polish-Jewish Ex-Servicemen's Association. The silent march, which stretched for half a mile, was organized by the Board of Deputies in conjunction with some 20 other Jewish bodies representing the entire Anglo-Jewish community. The marchers carried hundreds of banners with statements protesting the cam- paign of the Communist Polish regime against Polish Jews. Their letter declared that "we are shocked that the Jews of Poland, numbering about 20.000, many of whom are aged and infirm, should be singled out as scapegoats and blamed for Poland's internal difficulties." But I have grown bored to death by all the bragging and arrogance." Accounts of Israeli attempts to aid developing African and Asian nations are debunked. "Well, Israelis are trying to soothe their conscience. It is . just like the American establishment sending out a Peace Corps of a few thousand while the main thrust is busy brutalizing Vietnam."
