The appeals were made in reso- lutions adopted at an all-day con- ference of the JCRC, comprised of 14 local units of major Jewish organizations. Arthur J. Levine, president, asked New York Jewry "to support every responsible action that has as its aim the integration of the Negro into the mainstream of so- ciety." Albert Vorspan, director of the commission on social action of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, said there was a need to "re-educate" the Jewish community because Jews were "backlashing as other white Ameri- cans are backlashing." Mrs. Dorothy Jones of the Prot- estant Council told the 100 Jewish communal leaders that anti-Semi- tism "is on the rise" in the Negro community and that Negroes were "disappointed" because Jews had "hedged" on issues involving mi- nority group needs in various city boroughs. Meanwhile, the American Jew- ish Committee has published a list of areas of action by which members and Americans genet-. ally could help to implement the resolutions of the President's National Advisory Committee on Civil Disorders. The organization listed 11 such areas in its newsletter in which it said that it was becoming steadily more recognized that "only a huge, concerted attack on the ghetto crisis—as blueprinted by the com- mission—will permanently restore safety to our city streets without destroying our civil liberties and tearing the nation apart.' Israeli Artist Disclaims Distorted 'Signed' Letter (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) TEL AVIV — A prize-winning Israeli artist who lectures at the Haifa Technion repudiated Wednes- day an anti-Israel letter that was published in the Moscow news- paper Pravda over his own and some 90 other signatures, many of them Israelis. Itzhak Danziger, a sculptor, said he was misled as to the contents of the letter which accused Israel of persecuting Arabs in the occu- pied territories. He said he was approached to sign the letter by another instructor at the Technion. who said it was for publication in a local newspaper. But it appeared in Pravda and was a distorted ver- sion of the letter that he had signed the sculptor claimed. Kibutz Negba, an affiliate of the left-wing labor party Mapam, voted Tuesday to expel a member who was also a signatory of the Pravda letter. The member re- fused to repudite the letter and said he was being ousted because of his political views. Esther Silk Dies in L.A. Mrs. Esther Silk, the former Mrs. L.
