Jewison producing and directing
the multi-million dollar epic, the
largest to date for the director of
"The Russians are Coming" and
"In the Heat of the Night."
"Gaily Gaily" goes before the
crmeras in its actual locale of
I 1 Chicago on June 14. Melina Mer-
couri portrays a madam of the
house of prostitution, favorite liv-
ing quarters of an innocent young
man who doesn't know w'at it's
all about — actually, the author
himself. The central character of
the melodrama with political in-
trigues and murder has not . yet
been cast. One tries to find an
unknown for the role of the young
Ben Hecht. Another of the leading
male characters is being played
by Brian Keith.

Mirisch Bros. also prepare for
an April 23 starting date in Madrid,
Spain, of "Guns of the Magnificent
Seven"—the second sequel to "The
Magnificent Seven"--in itself the
Americanized version of a Japan-
ese classic.
Sam Katzman, who has pro-
duced 500 motion pictures since
before World War I when he en-
tered the business at the old Fox
studios in Fort Lee, N.J., has
always specialized in timely sub-.
ject matters for his low-budg-
eted, highly successful quickies.
Last year, the veteran producer
completed, "Riot on the Sunset
Strip." Currently, he prepares
for MGM, his biggest in many a
year. "The Young Runaways,"
originally titled, "Where Are Our
Children?" a dramatic story
about juvenile runaways with
several roles for teenage girls.
Ernst Le'lman is producing,
"Hello Dolly," f r o m hiS own
screenplay based on the Broadway
musical which is based on Thorn- ;
ton Wilder's "The Matchmaker,H
which in turn has its basis in the
160-year-old comedy by the Aus-
Man, Johann Nestroy. "Hello
Dolly" stars Barbra Streisand, the
sensational new screen star of
"Funny Girl" who now moves
from television and recording ac-
tiyities, full blast into a movie
career. Walter Matthau portrays
the heavy, Michael Crawford the
juvenile lover and Louis Armstrong
makes the noises in the 20th-Cen-
tury-Fox multi-million dollar ex-
travaganza to be directed by Gene
Kelly.

Buddy Hackett is in the chips in
more ways than one. The rotund
comedian of the Las Vegas night-
club circuit will soon be seen on
TV potato chip commercials as
successor to the late Bert Lahr,
saying, "I'll bet you can't eat just
one." Hackett is currently essaying
the role of a comical mechanic in
Walt Disney's production of "The
Love Bug," co-starring Dean Jones,
Michele Lee, David Tomlinson and
Joe Flynn. Buddy is writing the TV
commercial himself.
Edward G. Robinson is a natural
for the role of a big-time gangster
art collector in "Never a Dull Mo-
ment," co-starring with Dorothy
Provine and Dick Van Dyke. In
private life, Robinson (an under-
world character in many of his past
films, beginning with "Little Cae-
sar") maintains an extensive col-
lection of master artwork. Not to
be out-done by her husband, Mrs.
Robinson has opened an art busi-
ness in Los Angeles called "Giraffe
Gallery."
Jerry -Lewis is preparing his 38th
feature film, his fourth at Colum-
bia, "Hook Line and Sinker,". an
original yarn about a wife who
plots to kill her husband for the in-
surance. Rod Amateau is produc-
ing; George Marshall directs from
Jerry's own screenplay, with the
comedian himself protraying the
would-be victim.
Henry Levin will shoot "The
Marauders," an action-adventure
Western for producer Irving Allen
on location in Spain. Vince Ed-
wards, Jack Palance, and Neville
Brand have commenced their per-
formances, with Sylvia Syms and
son Benjamin Edney joining the
cast from England.
