MONUMENT UNVEILINGS

A former Nazi foreign ministry
official, Franz Rademacher,
leaves a court building in Bam-
berg, Germany, a free man. He
was sentenced to five years at
hard labor in prison for helping
kill more than 3,000 Jews and
aiding in the deportation of an-
other 80,000 to death camps. He
was freed because he was sen-
tenced in 1952 for the same
crimes, and spent 18 months in
investigatory custody before both
trials.

Pope Paul Finds Common

Bond in Old Testament

ROME (JTA)—Pope Paul VI de-
scribed the Old Testament as "our
common heritage" and declared
that it was "honored by all of us"
during an audience for 150 partici-
pants in the Sixth International
Congress on the Old Testament,
which brought together Roman
Catholics, Protestants, Jews and
Greek Orthodox. "What prayer can
be more profoundly devout, more
'universal and more moving than
recital of the Psalms?" he
asked, adding that "in this sense,
we can all pray together."

2 Who Rescued Jews
Receive Israel Awards

ROME (JTA) — A German writ-
er and a representative of a
Florentine family who aided Jews
during the Nazi occupation of Italy
in 1943 and '44, were awarded gold
medals Monday by Ambassador
Ehud Avriel of Israel.
The recipients were Armin Wag-
ner, who helped many Jews escape
the deportation round-ups, and
Mario Elina Santorini, of Florence,
whose family protected Jews in
hiding. Santorini said he always
considered his family's actions as
normal moral behavior.
; Wagner, in a brief emotional
response, said he could not accept
thanks because it was he himself
who should be thankful to the
Jews.
