Harmony Between Brazil's Jews, Arabs Reported to WJC

NEW YORK — Good neighborly
relations exist between Brazil's
more than 150,000 Jews and its
nearly 500,000 Arabs, Dr. Moyses
Kauffmann, president of the Con-
federacao Israelita do Brasil, told
World Jewish Congress representa-
tives May 2.
"Relations have been consistent-
ly good between us and our Arab
fellow citizens of Brazil," Dr.
Kauffman said. "There is mutual
respect between the communities
and although there was a little
minor tension last summer before
and immediately after the fighting
in the Middle East, efforts to blow
this up into something bigger failed
completely."
The Arab community, according
to Dr. Kauffmann, has great influ-
ence in government and political
circles.
Brazil's Jewish community en-
joys good relations with all sections
of the population. "There is gener-
ally more tolerance in Brazil than
in most other countries," Dr. Kauff-
mann said, "based on acceptance
of the racial, ethnic and cultural
heterogeneity and the intermingl-
ing that has taken place over a
long period of time."

Israel's Blind 'See'
Colors Using Touch

JERUSALEM —

The invention
"Tactichrome" is a system which
enables the blind if not actually
to see pictures, to feel their shapes
and to substitute a very carefully-
worked-out series of textures for
shades of color.
Red is warm and rough. Blue
feels quite soft. The graduations
are much too fine to be felt by
a sighted person or an untrained
blind person, but the blind are
being taught at the Jewish Institute
for the Blind here and they form
what is virtually a new tactile
alphabet.
Blind students learn about thun-
der and lightning, light and shade,
and the phases of the moon,. but
their understanding is scientific
and theoretical. Now they can
"feel" a fork of lightning or the
shape of a cloud. It teaches the
blind that they can see more than
one thing at a time. They had no
conception of a composite picture
or a field of vision.
Cooperating fully with the Jew-
ish Institute for the Blind in this
training project are Israel's min-
istry of social welfare and the
ministry of labor.
Keren-Or, Inc., of New York City
is the support wing of the institute
in the United States.

children enrolled in such schools
in Sao Paulo. The Renanscenso day
school has an enrollment of more

strengthening Jewish life and advancing human rights at a golden
jubilee dinner that honored one of its original founders—Max Dolt,
shown as be received the warm greetings of Judge Justine Wise
Polier. Doft worked with Judge Polices father, the late Rabbi Stephen
S. Wise, in founding the Congress in 1918. President Johnson, former
President Truman, ex-Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and other
world leaders hailed the Congress' half-century of service to Jews and
democratic causes, in messages to the dinner.
