Eighteen teen-agers — including one from New York—have signed up to date for the two-month study- and-travel trip to Israel. The ulpan is concluded at the Technion in Haifa in cooperation with the department of education and culture of the Jewish Agency. Teen-age students of modern He- brew from all over the country have been invited via brochure to contact the Center here about in- clusion in the ulpan, which is formed primarily from graduates of the first summer ulpan conduct- ed at the Center in 1967. The teen-agers were introduced. to modern conversational Hebrew at the Center, where they spent five days a week for seven weeks learning Hebrew in informal set- tings and practicing the language in- social and recreational situa- tions. Follow-up weekly sessions since autumn have prepared the group for the ulpan in Israel. The Israel Ulpan is essential- ly a full-time summer school in Hebrew and related subjects. 'Weekend tours of urban centers and a week's guided tour of country and historical sites will be added, as well as trips to va- rious settlements, participation in activities with teen-agers at the Rothschild Center in Haifa, an opportunity to stay with Isra- eli families and attendance at cultural events. Kashrut and the Sabbath will be strictly observed. Eligibility will be restricted to high school students who are able to speak modern Hebrew. The brightness of our life is gone, sha- dows of the evening fall around us and the world seems but a dim re- flection itself—a broader shadow. We look forward into the coming lonely night; the soul withdraws itsel f. Then stars arise, and the night is wholly.—Longfellow.
