tive was offered to The Jewish
News this week by Council Presi-
dent Matilda Rubin.
Mrs. Rubin pointed out that the
co-op store, a Negro self-help en-
terprise on Linwood Ave which
which was described in last week's
Jewish News, was merely assisted
by the AJC "in the financing of
their initial inventory." The co-op
was created by "200 black fami-
lies who, in their appropriate quest
for self-determination, worked so
long to broaden the economic base
of black Detroiters by forming the
co-op and acquiring the store."
Mrs. Rubin said that the coun-
cil is "in accord with their le-
gitimate goal and in acting as
`enablers,' we carefully sought to
render our services within the
confines of self-determination."
The council has not acted as a
liaison with the Detroit business
community, she said, stressing
that "every step we took was made
in concert with the Black Star
officers in accordance with their
