24—Friday, May 3, 1968 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Air. and Mrs. Brown Honeymoon in Rome Operation Friendship, Haven for Elderly Ex-Patients, Studied as Model for U.S.A. A federally aided program of the Detroit Section, National Conn- ell of Jewish Women, which en- ables elderly patients at Ypsilanti State Hospital to return to inde- pendent living under volunteer su- pervision has been given a re- newed grant through the Michigan Commission on Aging. In addition, "Operation Friend- ship" is expected to be projected as a model of its kind for the coun- try. It is one of only two projects in Michigan to be so honored under the Older Americans Act. The U.S. Senate Special Commit- tee on Aging sent a staff member to Detroit to study Operation Friendship and a long report on tlie program ensued recently in the committee's magazine, Aging. The patients, most of whom have been in the hospital's psychiatric ward for more than 15 years, are Meatless yet so Weftige IT STICKS TO THE SPAGHETTI NEW THICK HOME STYLE SAUCE FROM Chef Boy-Ar-Dee Your family will love it—so thick It sticks to the spaghetti, never sinks to a pool on your plate. In the two years since the non- sectarian program was started, 10 persons have been placed. Five live in boarding houses, two pairs of women are roommates in their own apartment and one manages an apartment by her- self. Many more are being pro- cessed for similar help. Mrs. Victor Shiffman, president of the section, said that the most startling improvement was in the two women, aged 61 and 70, who now share an apartment. She said that when they first came to the attention of program officials, "they were completely apathetic. They seemed to be there only because they were asked. But as soon as they were placed, they came to life. They both keep house excellently,. love to have visitors and really take part in our club." A 67-year-old Negro woman, who feared leaving the hospital, has made such strides she now be- longs to three other programs and is helping other older people to become acquainted with the city. Program participants are ini- tially chosen by the hospital staff in consultation with Operation Friendship's professional social worker. The hospital staff decides which type of housing is most suitable and prepares the patient for placement while the section seeks the appropriate housing. Mrs. Shiffman said volunteers had helped greatly by setting up apartments, getting gifts of fur- niture and even holding "showers" for household incidentals. Many former patients needed help in learning again such everyday tasks as shopping, using a checking ac- count and paying bills. The section now assigns two volunteers to act as special friends to each of the former patients so that they can be assured of occasional visitors and someone to telephone in case of an emergency. for Peace' Urge Jarring Press Efforts Israel 'Women (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) JERUSALEM — Israel's Council of Women for Peace petitioned UN envoy Ambassador Gunnar Jar- ring Tuesday to make every ef- fort to bring peace to the Middle East.
