Arnoni's Effective Resume of Middle East Situation; Leftists Challenged on Issues M. S. Arnoni is a leftist. His magazine, The Minority of One, is the arch-independent magazine that is considered leftist. Its grow- ing subscription list attests to an admiration for a man of independ- ent thinking. He is a bitter foe of the U. S. Viet- nam policies, and he has exposed the crimes of the Nazis. He does not hesitate to oppose Establish- ments which seek Arnoni to impose their wills on the populace. The magazine Of which Arnoni is the editor is described as an "independent monthly f o r an American alternative — dedicated to the eradication of all restric- tions on thought," and the legend adhered to, a quotation from George Orwell, asserts — "there was truth and there was untruth, and if you clung to the truth even against the whole world, you were not mad." Leftists expected Arnoni to op- pose Israel, to to endorse the ex- treme left's antagonistic attitude towards the Zionist cause. He emerged once again as the sup- porter of truth, as the opponent of the traducers, and he has writ- ten, first in a complete issue of The Minority of One and now in a full-length book. an anatomycal analysis of the vriddle East situa- tion and the Six-nay War that rates for his acco! , nt major' con- • amigo% fat vt Iwo a is a a IT'S U a STORAGE TIME a aPROTECT a YOUR WINTER GARMENTS a AGAINST a FIRE a THEFT aa & MOTHS' U • a VASSAR CLEANERS 111 a Northwest Area's Most Modern Plant 7 Mile nr. Arnoni's analyses relate not only to the status of Israel, the era during which there was a threat that Israel and the Israelis would be annihilated — relating to the situation as it existed in May 1967 — but devotes itself very thoroughly to the facts which evolved from Arab quarters. And he deals so effectively also with the Russian position that his book gains a top spot among those aimed at revealing the bases for the Middle East crises. Few of the many published books about the Middle East have so devastatingly dealt with the lies that crept into the United Nations discussions and the lies that were perpetrated by Arab and Soviet Union propagandists. It is especially noteworthy that adherence to progressive princi- ples. transcending the Middle East's problems, concernig them- selves with the effect of develop- ing events upon the world peace Problems, elevate Arnoni's book — "Rights and Wrongs in the Arab- Israel Conflict"—above the ro'itine journalistic efforts of other works about the Six-Day War. It is the aftermath and the total picture which causes that "anatomy of the forces of nroq- ross and reaction in the Middle East" to be of such gre"t merit. Published by Minority of (The Prers (155 Pennington. Passaic. Arnoni's book throws ,ligh1 on the history of the neonles in the middle East. It defends Israel's right to exist. He declares em- phatically: "Certainly, there must be some- thing, wrong with such an inter- pretation of the historic tasks of progressive people and the national liberation forces as. in effect, denies the right to life instead of upholding it. The spectacle of communists, social- ists and Asian and African anti- imperialists supporting the poli- cies of unreformed pro-Nazi-Arab leaders is unbelievable despite its sad reality. No presumed ideological or political consist- ency is worth such dehumaniza- tion." Arnoni, as an aftermath to this book, published an article that ex- posed the horrors of Polish anti- Semitism (portion of it having been reproduced in The Jewish News). Go to Israel! Go Greek Line! On the score of his expose of leftist delusions, Arnoni renders a great service. If only those who have been misled into following a Communist - organized blockade against Israel will study the facts he presents, a great additional ser- vice can he benefited from his noteworthy book. Recognizing that the prospects for a settlement of the issue in- volve the two super-powers who are engaged in the Cold War, Ar- noni has interesting nronosals. In his conclusions he propagates that Israel should not maintain a one-sided relationship with the United States and should strive for cordial relations with the Soviet Union and the Third World. He emphasizes that "nothing constructive and peace- preserving can even begin in the Middle East unless the Arab world is first induced to realize that its claimed prerogative to annihilate Israel is wrong, im- moral, intolerable and unachiev- able." He is not hopeless, main- tains that the approach to peace is "slow and tedious" but that "none of the difficulties is in- surmountable and none more de- cisive that the Arab attitude," and he adds on that score: "Rarely in history has a clearer option confronted nations than that which now confronts the Arabs: Contruction or Destruc- tion. When all is said and consid- ered, the final answer is theirs." The author adds to his conclu- sion this admonition: "A just solu- tion of the Middle East conflict must spell out the survival and welfare of all, not the survival of some and welfare for the few. If I find myself in candid sympathy with Israel rather than with the Arab states, this is not because of greater political or cultural rap- port with the former, indeed for no reason other than the fact that Israel's position is immensely closer to the principle of survival and welfare for all then is the Arab position."
