Michigan Congressman Wants Russia
Out of the Olympics for Anti-Jewish Bias

/

Michigan Congressman Jack Mc-
Donald called on the International
Olympic Committee Tuesday to
bar Soviet Russia from the sum-
mer Olympics because of Russia's
"brutal physical and spiritual per-
secution of the Jews."
McDonald, a Republican, based
his demand on the fact that "poli-
tical considerations" were cited by
the IOC's executive board as the
reason for withdrawal of an invi-
tation to South Africa.
He noted that the invitation had
resulted in a threat by Afro-Asian
nations and Russia to boycott the
games.
McDonald charged that there is
a "double standard with one set
of rules apparently for South
Africa and another for • a number
of other countries, particularly
Soviet Russia."
He accused the IOC's board of

acting "at the point of a black-

mail gun" in withdrawing the
invitation.
Noting that the Afro-Asian bloc
and Russia were opposed to South
Africa's participation because of
South Africa's domestic politics,
McDonald contended that Russia

Girl, 16, Wins

Israel Bible Quiz

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A 16-year-
old Petah Tikvah girl beat out
male competition to win Israel's
national Bible quiz here Sunday
night. She is Rivka Goldberg, a
sixth-term student at a religious
high school, who captured the title
of "Bible Bride of 1968" for her
knowledge of the Bible. Miss Gold-
berg will represent Israel in the
international Bible contest, along
with her two runners-up, Shabtai
Askenazi and Aryeh Katz.

should be barred on similar
grounds.
"Is Russia's long record of per-
secution of members of the Jewish
relegion less obnoxious than South
Africa's policy toward its black
people?" he asked.
"Must we deduce from this
double standard that it is somehow
all right to carry out a systematic
strangulation of Jewish religion,
culture and communal living in
Russia? Is the Russian Jew a non-
person whose plight is of no con-
cern to those worried about the
black South African?"
McDonald said "this application
of a double standard is the sheer-
est hypocrisy."
He said political considerations
"should not play a part in athletic
competition," but that if South
Africa is barred because of its in-
ternal policies, Russia also should
be barred because of its anti-
Jewish policies.

Birmingham Temple Rai
to Review Fiedler Stories

Marvin Rosen, son of Mrs.
Joseph Rosen, 30224 Southfield, has
become affiliated with one of New
York's new sounds in Hebrew-
Jewish-folk music.
His professional quartet, which
goes under the name "The Ar-
baah-Kolote" or, in English, "The
Voices Four," has created a blend
of traditional and contemporary.
The group consists of three
males and a female, all of whom
sing and play instruments. Since
their debut at a hanuka party last
January under the auspices of the
Jewish Theological Seminary.
where Rosen is a student, they
have been approached by various
organizations.
They gave two Saturday night
concerts in late February at Town
Hall, New York City, and are
booked for a concert in Montreal
on Israel Independence Day. Radio
listeners have also heard them on
WKCR, a local station affiliated
with Columbia University, where
Rosen is a pre-medical student.
The group also expects to be
making an album shortly which
will appear sometime in mid-June.
Rosen is a graduate of Mumford
High School and Cong. Shaarey
Zedek Hebrew School.

Birmingham Temple Spring Lit-
erary Series will continue with a
review of short stories by Leslie
