British Press Raps
Saudi Insult to Envoy

LONDON (JTA) — The British
press reacted sharply over the
Saudi Arabian government's re-
neging on its agreement to accept
Horace Phillips as the new British
ambasador, because he comes
from a Jewish family.
The Daily Mail gave the story a
front page banner headline stating,
"Arabs Ban our Ex-Jewish En-
voy." The paper noted that in ad-
dition to "disgust at the racialism"
there is "irony in the fact that
Phillips abandoned the Jewish faith
long ago."
The diplomat's parents were
Jewish and he was a practicing
Jew in. Glasgow in his teens.
The Times said that no one at
the foreign office could recall a
precedent for the Saudian with-
drawal from an agreement once
it was given. "The Saudians indi-
cated clearly that the decision was
`.taken because of Phillips' Jewish
background."
The Daily Express declared that
"diplomatic courtesy prevents a
formal protest by Britain, but the
foreign office statement regretting
the Saudian action only thinly con-
ceals the indignation in Whitehall.

Czechs Voice Solidarity
With State of Israel

TEL AVIV (ZINS)—Non-Jewish
Czechs have asked their friends in
Israel to send them emblems of
the Menora, according to press
reports. In their letters the Czechs
said they wanted to use Israeli
insignia to demonstrate their
solidarity with Israel and to pro-
test their government's negative
attitude toward Israeli's self-
defense.
The liberal revolution rising
in Eastern European countries,
aimed to break the stranglehold
of the Soviet Union is, in a
large measure, the outcome of
Israeli's Six-Day War, accord-
ing to political experts who have
just returned from the Com-
munist satellite states.
The embattled intellectuals
there, the politicos say, were in-
spired by little Israel's defiance
of the Russian threats and the
drubbing it administered to
Russia's Arab allies.
They also reported that the in-
tellectuals are still baffled as to
why the Russians had not inter-
vened to save their Arab proteges
from defeat.

Amusement Tax
An indignant judge fined a big
lug $110 for turning his wife into
a punching bag. "The $100 fine is
justified," admitted the lug, "but
why the extra $10 bite?" "That,"
said the judge, "is the amusement
tax."
