`Independence Week' Slated
for April 28-May 5 at Center

"Sallah," award-winning motion
picture comedy from Israel, will
be a highlight of a week-long cele-
bration of the 20th anniversary of
Israel's independence at the Jewish
Center, April 28-May 5.
"Sallah" will be shown 8 p.m.
May 1 in the Aaron DeRoy Theater.
A limited number of seats are now
on sale.
An art show featuring original
Israel art will be open to the pub-
lic daily throughout the week. The
work of more than 20 prominent
Israeli artists will be on display
and for sale.
Opening event of the Indepen-
dence Week celebration will be
8 p.m. April 28, when the Zionist
Council of Detroit and the Jewish
ommunity Council will co-spon-
lor a program. Mashe Leshem,
Ambassador who is a member of
Israel's permanent mission at
the United Nations, will speak,
and there will be entertainment.
The Center's Hebrew Club will
present an all-Hebrew program

An anniversary celebration will
be conducted 8:30 p.m., May 4 by
the Israeli Students Organization.
A c h o i r, instrumental ensemble
and dance group will perform in
a memorial ceremonial and page-
ant. Israeli folk dancing, social
dancing and refreshments will fol-
low the theater program.
The third annual Youth Zimriya
will be offered 2 p.m. May 5. The
Jewish community's youth choirs
will sing in Hebrew and conduct
a community sing.
A teach-in for high school stu-
dents co-sponsored by Hadassah
and the Jewish Center May 5 will
be the week's concluding event.

"Sallah" ran for seven months
on Broadway. Written by Israeli
humorist Ephraim K i s h o n, the
film stars Haym Topol. Two Gold-
en Gate and two Golden Globe
awards have been captured by
"Sallah," as well as a 1967 Oscar
nomination as the Best Foreign
Film.

Mayor Carl Stokes to
Be at NAACP Dinner

The appearance of Carl B.
Stokes, mayor of Cleveland, and
entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. as-
sure that the 13th annual Detroit
NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner 5
p.m. April 28 at Cobo Hall will
rank as the largest NAACP fund-
raising event in the country.
