WASHINGTON (JTA) — More
than 1,000 Jewish merchants and
property-owners were victims of
the riots in the District of Colum-
bit area last week.
Between 1,000 and 1,200 who suf-
fered losses turned up at an emer-

Jewish victims of the rioting, al-
though only about 200 had been
expected. Information collected at
the meeting disclosed that some
of the merchants had been left
destitute. A few were given tem-
porary, emergency aid by the
Jewish Social Service Agency and
the Hebrew Free Loan Society so
that they could celebrate Passover.
In Kansas City, Jewish mer-
chants and property owners suf-
fered some of the heaviest losses
in the two days of rioting, arson
and looting that shook Kansas City
last week, a survey by the Kan-
sas City Jewish Chronicle showed.
But there were no casualties
among - Jews, and the prevailing
opinion in the Jewish community
is that organized anti-Semitism
was not an important factor in the
racial disorders, the paper said.
It pointed out that no Jewish places
of worship were hit nor were any
public buildings owned by Jewish
organizations damaged.
Many stores that were destroyed
or looted were owned by Jews, and
some merchants said they were

Egypt Concedes Arabs
Fled Palestine in '48

TUNIS (ZINS) — An official
survey made by the Egyptian
government confirmed that during
the Israel-Arab war of 1948, the
Palestinian Arabs had abandoned
their homes with the hope they
would soon return following the
presumed defeat of Israel by the
seven Arab countries.
This is the first time that an
Arab source conceded that Israel
had not forced the Arabs to flee
during its struggle for existence,
contrary to their propaganda.

"Licked Into Shape"
"Licked into shape" is a term
derived from an ancient supersti-
tion. The early Greeks believed
that mother bears gave birth to a
shapeless living mass which they
then licked into the shape of a cub.
