\u/ 20—Friday, April 19, 1968 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Needs of ORT Schools Outlined as Imperial Ball Plans Announced Ambitious plans for the Imperial Ball of Michigan Region, Women's American ORT, are under way for p.m. at Raleigh House. Violins will greet the guests during the cocktail hour, and later the Zan Gilbert orchestra will make music for dinner and dancing. Centerpieces will carry out the theme of the ball; "ORT Around the World," and the souvenir journal and favors will be distributed to guests. The 20 presidents of ORT 'chapters will serve as hostesses. A feature of the evening will be a floor show, "Designer Corner," presenting the latest Bill Blass, Cardin and other designer mod and conventional attire for men. Proceeds from the ball will be used to continue the support of ORT's vocational training schools in 22 countries, where manpower training has become the issue of the day. ORT is stressing that nations no longer can develop their full potential and prosper without their people prepared, educated and qualified to become highly productive. CoAcurrently, the costs of maintaining ORT schools has greatly increased. President of the Michigan Region of Women's American ORT is Mrs. Daniel C. Siegel. Co- chairmen of the ball are Mrs. Jerry Krandall and Mrs. Robert Fienberg. Assisting them are Mes- dames Joseph Kerzman, Frank Winton, Fred Greenspan, Ralph Bonin Arthur Bricker. Arthur Morrison, Manny Aissus, Leonore Cohen, Joseph Falk, Robert Kahn, Joseph Kron, Hubert Kurzon, Stanley Walkon and William Weinstein. The new .ORT song, first pre- sented at the recent national con- vention, will be introduced. A car will be awarded at midnight. According to Ed Patterson, a member of the Synanon sales staff, there is a growing awareness of the serious problem existing in middle-class areas, including the Jewish community. The Jewish News recently printed a two-part series on • grow- ing drug abuse among Jewish teen-agers. Patterson, a former drug addict, said young people respond positively when they see the rehabilitative program offered by Synanon and learn of the dangers in taking drugs. Synanon staff members have addressed students at Southfield High School twice, and teachers have brought students to the Saturday night open house at Synanon -House, 8344 E. Jefferson. A Detroiter was the 1,000th person to enter Synanon re- cently, and was settled into the Santa Monica facility after processing here. Detroit Synanon is striving to raise at least $15,000 as its share in the building of another house, this one in Chicago.
