JWB Acclaimed by the President Boris Smolar's 'Between You and Me' (Copyright 1968, JTA Inc.) POLISH ECHOES: Should American Jewry proclaim a boycott of Polish goods in the United States in retaliation for the ugly anti- Jewish propoganda campaign upon which the Polish government has embarked? Suggestions to that effect have been made by some Jewish groups. But they find no encouragement from the major Jewish organizations, such as the American Jewish Committee . . . It is certain that Polish export to the United States — very important to Poland's economy — would suffer, if a campaign to boycott Polish products were started in this country . . . Delegations of Jewish organizations which called upon the Polish ambassador in Washing- ton protesting the anti-Jewish propaganda conducted by the govern- ment-controlled press, received no satisfactory reply . . . Instead of assuring the Jewish representatives that the propaganda campaign — camouflaged as a campaign against "Zionism" — would be halted, the ambassador claimed that there is no anti-Semitism in Poland .. . This, at a time when Jewish organizations there have been threatened openly by government. organs demanding that they deny that an anti-Jewish atmosphere is now being created . . . It is obvious to American Jewish leaders that in blaming "Zionism" for student demonstrations, and by cynically belittling Jewish martyrdom during the Nazi occupation of Poland, the Warsaw regime is seeking to out- root the existing feelings of sympathy toward the Jews on the part of the Polish youth . .. More than 40 per cent of the Polish popula- tion today was born after the war and knows about the Nazi brutal- ities against the Jews in Poland only from what they read in books . . . Leaders of American Jewish organizations feel that the Polish government — by distorting the facts about the Nazi annihilation of the 3,000,000 Polish Jews, and alleging that Israel and West Ger- many are conspiring together against Poland — clearly seeks to indoctrinate the younger generation with. hatred toward Jews of the same magnitude as the hate they feel so deeply toward the Ger- mans . . . If this is not anti-Semitism, what is? • • "PROTOCOLS" IN POLAND: The lengths to which official anti-Jewish propaganda has gone in Poland can be seen from a study made of the situation in the country . . . The study reveals that the notorious anti-Semitic "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" — long established as a forgery — has suddenly received wide circulation in Poland . . . This could hardly take place without some official complicity . . . Students and lecturers at the Warsaw University have similarly started to receive anonymous, provocative anti-Semitic texts . . . The Polish minister of culture, Kazimiers Rusinek, spoke in a public address of the "presence of thousands of Nazi experts in the ranks of the Israeli army" . . . A booklet by a high official of the Polish ministry of interior, Tadeus Walichnowski, under the title "Germany and Israel," which presented the governments of Bonn and Jerusalem as accomplices, is now widely circulated throughout Poland . . . The Great General Encyclopedia issued in Poland has been criticized by Minister Rusinek in an article in the magazine "Polityka" for giving special attention to the Nazi extermination of Polish Jews in its description of the "Hitler Concentration Camps" . . . To ascribe Jewish nationality to Poles of Jewish origin the minister wrote, is "poltically harmful" . . The author of the article in the ency- clopedia, Jerzy Gumkowski, and some members of the editorial staff, were dismissed from the publishing house . . . Efforts to play down the martyrdom of Jews who died in the Nazi holocaust are also being made -by Radio Warsaw. EFFECT ON JEWS: American Jewish organizations, such as the United Hias Service, are now studying the possibilities of the emigra- tion from Poland as many of the 20,000 remaining Jews there as possible . . . American Jewish Committee leaders have conferred with State Department officials on the question of speeding up emigra- tion procedures for Jewish applicants at the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw I • Israel is, of course, ready to admit as many Jews from Poland as may wish to go there . . . However, Jewish emigration from Poland seems to be no easy matter today, despite the fact that Gomulka said publicly that Jews wishing to leave Poland would be permitted to do so . . . Emigration of Jews from Poland has faced government block- age since Israel's Six-Day War . . In addition, the Polish Government raised the passport fees from a few hundred zloty to 5,000 . . It has also insisted that families who leave the country must zloty use two or more passports . . . This represents substantial cost in terms of Polish income . . . Meanwhile, Jews in Poland are beginning to face ever greater economic difficulties. ISRAEL Stay at the hotel m a class by itself" We didn't say this about the Shera- ton-Tel Aviv. Johnson has acclaimed the National Jewish Welfare Board and its affiliated Jewish centers and YM and YWHAs for setting an example in "constructive civic involvement" through their "crea- tive participation in our domestic effort to build a better society." In a message to JWB on the occasion of its 1968 national bien- nial convention which begins Wednesday at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, the President said: "For 50 years your cultural, re- ligious, educational and recreation- al programs have lent comfort and inspiration to the brave Jewish men and women serving in our armed forces. Through them you have forged and sustained the vital link between some of the finest traditions of our democratic so- ciety and the needs of the military in times of peace and war. "At the same time, the un- grudging efforts of your affiliat- ed Jewish Community centers and Young Men's and Young Women's H e b r e w Association have placed the nation in your debt." Wilbur J. Cohen,, newly-named health, education and welfare sec- retary, said that the role of the Jewish centers movement, because of the impetus that it has given federal anti-poverty, mental health and community service projects, has been enhanced as "a force for social betterment and pro- gress."
