Beth Shalom to Honor Rabbi Halpern
on Bar Mitzva Year With Synagogue

Cong. Beth Shalom will honor
Rabbi Mordecai S. Halpern for his
13 years as spiritual leader of the
congregation at a testimonial din-
ner 7 p.m. May 19, in the Beth
Shalom social hall.
Albert Rosenblum, president, an-
nounced that the affair, on behalf
of Israel Bonds, also will celebrate
Israel's 20th anniversary.
Rabbi Halpern, son of the late
Dr. Abraham E. Halpern, spiritual
leader of St. Louis' Cong. Bnai
Emoonah, NV a s or-
dained at the
Jewish Theologi-
cal Seminary in
1953. At his or-
dination, Rabbi
Halpern was ,
awarded the But-
tenweiser prize
in Bible and the
Lamport Homilet..
ics prize for Rabbi Halpern
preaching, as well as a master's
degree in Hebrew literature.
He served as chaplain in Fort
Campbell, Ky., and in Stuttgart
until June 1955, when he was called
to then just recently founded Beth
Shalom.

Moses Englander Dies;
Carmel Wine Co. VP

NEW YORK—Moses Englander,
vice president and general manag-
er of the Carmel Wine Co., died
Sunday at age 58.
Mr. Englander joined Carmel in
1953. Carmel is a subsidiary of the
Palestine Economic Corp. and
Carmel Wines of Israel. It is the
largest importer of sacramental
kosher wines into the United
States, and does a business in ex-
cess of $2,000,000 annually.

Dr. Leon Diskin,
Detroit Dentist

Dr. Leon Diskin, prominent De-
troit dentist, died Sunday at age
61. Dr. Diskin had offices at 16889
James Couzens.
A graduate of the University of
Michigan dental school in 1931,
Dr. Diskin was a member of
Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity
and the American Association of
Orthorontists and a fellow of the
American Board of Orthodontists.
He also belonged to the Zionist
Organization of America, Pisgah
Lodge of Bnai Brith and Adas
Shalom Synagogue. Born in Glens
Falls, N. Y., Dr. Diskin resided
here at 16210 Oxley, Southfield.
Survivors are his wife, Marion;
two sons, David and Kenneth;
three brothers, Bernard, Dr.
Herman of Beverly Hills, Calif.,
and Dr. Ben R.; and seven sisters,
Mrs. Abe (Annie) Weintraub,
Mrs. Sadie Resnick and Mrs.
David (Ida) Levy, all of Miami
Beach; Mrs. Rose Yoffee, Mrs.
Anna Marks of Kalamazoo, Mrs.
Lillian Sprague and Zelda of
Chicago.

Samuel Spring, owner until his
retirement six years ago, of Spring
Men and Boys Wear on Livernois
and Seven Mile Rd., died April 17
at age 74.
Mr. Spring, 19740 Cranbrook,
was born in Poland and lived in
Detroit for 50 years. He was a
member of Cong. Beth Abraham.
Surviving are his wife, Freda;
two daughters, • Mrs. A. Albert
(Beatrice) Sugar and Mrs. Jesse
(Florence) Rice; two brothers, Max
and Arnold, both of California; two
sisters, Mrs. Harry (Rose) Wine-
berg and Mrs. Eva Gilbert of To-
ronto; six grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.

Caesar Adler, Victim of Gangland Slaying

Caesar P. Adler, a onetime De-
troit builder, was found dead in
an abandoned car Wednesday at
Lincoln Center shopping center,
Oak Park. Mr. Adler, 54, was the
victim of what police described as
a gangland-type slaying.
Mr. Adler, a native of Provi-
dence, R.I., resided at 19884 Cran.
brook.
Survivors are a son, Sanford, and

Helen Sarah Liebson, a member
of several community organiza-
tions, died April 13 at age 73.
Mrs. Liebson, 19820 W. Twelve
Mile, Southfield, was born in Aus-
tria-Hungary and lived in the De-
troit area for the past 50 years.
She was a member of Cong. Bnai
Moshe and its sisterhood, Cong.
Beth Sholem of Hollywood, Fla.,
and its sisterhood, H a d a s s a h,
Jewish National Fund, Hebrew
Ladies Aid Society, Bnai Brith,
Order of the Eastern Star, Jewish
Home for the Aged and the Sinai
Guild of Miami.
Survivors are two daughters,
Mrs. Sol (Diane) Colton and Mrs.
Abraham (Jeanette) Miller; eight
grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren.

a MIAMI BEACH — Charles Heft-
* zig, president of the Metropolitan
News Company of New York, the
sat nation's largest newspaper whole-
saler, died April 13 at age 84.
At 16 he was one of five boys
who amalgamated their newspaper
delivery routes to form the Metro-
politan News Company, with as-
sets of $2,000 and a horse and
wagon. With four Yiddish dailies,
they handled and delivered the
I papers in downtown neighborhoods
with a pushcart. In 1901, their
earnings for the first year totaled
$150,000.
With his share of the profitable
delivery business, Mr. Hertzig in-
vested in hotels, nursing homes and
bowling alleys.

LONDON—Dr. Simon Yudkin,
a well-known pediatrician and
professor of pediatrics and a
Zionist of long standing, was found
dead under mysterious circum-
stances in a village near here
